7 Killed in WY Plane Crash, Including Members of Gospel Quartet

 July 28, 2024

In a tragic accident, seven individuals, including three members of the Nelons gospel quartet and a prominent official from Georgia, lost their lives in a plane crash in Wyoming.

The crash occurred as the gospel group was en route to join the Gaither Homecoming Cruise to Alaska, as ABC News reports.

Details Emerge About Crash

The incident took place on a Friday afternoon in Campbell County, Wyoming. The aircraft, a single-engine turboprop Pilatus PC-12/47E, went down north of Gillette, roughly 250 miles north of Cheyenne.

Among the deceased were Kelly Nelon Clark, co-founder of the Nelons; her husband, Jason Clark; her daughter, Amber Nelon Kistler; Amber's husband, Nathan Kistler; a family friend and band assistant, Melodi Hodges; the chairman of the Georgia Board of Corrections, Larry Haynie, who piloted the aircraft; and his wife, Melissa Haynie. There were no survivors. Information suggests that an issue with the autopilot may have played a role in the crash.

Victims Remembered for Contributions

Kelly Nelon Clark, along with the Nelons, has made a significant impact on gospel music, culminating in their induction into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 2016. They have also been honored with ten GMA Dove Awards.

The loss is deeply felt within the gospel music community and beyond. Autumn Nelon Streetman expressed gratitude for the support received, stating, “Thank you for the prayers that have been extended already to me, my husband, Jamie, and our soon-to-be-born baby boy, as well as Jason’s parents, Dan and Linda Clark. We appreciate your continued prayers, love, and support as we navigate the coming days.”

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp also conveyed his condolences, asking others to join in prayer for all affected by the tragedy.

Investigation Underway

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the crash. Keith Holloway, an NTSB spokesperson, noted the challenges ahead, explaining, “The aircraft is in a remote location and once they gain access, they will begin documenting the scene, examining the aircraft. The aircraft will then be recovered and taken to a secure facility for further evaluation.”

A preliminary report is anticipated within 30 days, with a comprehensive final report potentially taking up to two years to complete.

Fire Contained at Crash Site

Authorities managed to contain a fire sparked by the crash to less than one square mile, preventing further damage in the remote area of Campbell County.

The full details of the crash's cause are yet to be determined, but the initial indication points toward an autopilot malfunction during the flight. The aircraft, known for its reliability, has drawn attention from aviation experts and authorities alike.

Community, Family Mourn Loss

The gospel music community, along with families of the victims, are mourning the devastating loss. The Nelons’ contributions to gospel music over the years have left an indelible mark, making the tragedy particularly poignant. The Clark family, in particular, has faced an unbelievable loss of three immediate family members. Their contributions to gospel music and their faith have been a beacon for many within the community.

Kemp’s reflections underscore the wider impact, as he said, “Our entire family is asking everyone to join us in praying for those who have been lost, for their loved ones and communities, and for those throughout the gospel music community who have lost dear friends in this heartbreaking accident.”

Importance of Safety Measures

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in aviation. The NTSB's thorough investigation will likely emphasize the need for enhanced protocols and the critical role of technology in preventing future tragedies.

As the investigation continues, families and friends of the deceased are urged to find solace in the legacy left behind by those who perished.

A Lasting Legacy in Gospel Music

The Nelons’ music will continue to inspire and comfort many, even as their loved ones navigate the difficult days ahead. The appreciation for their work and the outpouring of support reflect the profound impact they had within their community.

Autumn Nelon Streetman’s message captures the spirit of resilience and the importance of community support in times of sorrow: “We appreciate your continued prayers, love, and support as we navigate the coming days.” As authorities work to understand the causes of the crash, the legacy of the Nelons and the individuals on board is remembered and cherished by those who knew and loved them.

An Outpouring of Support

The gospel music community and broader public have responded with an outpouring of prayers and support for the families affected by this tragedy. The loss is one that resonates deeply within the hearts of many who have been touched by the music and lives of those lost.

The Nelons, with their rich history and contribution to gospel music, exemplify the spirit and dedication that continues to inspire. Their legacy will endure in the hymns and hearts of those who carry their memory forward.

In conclusion, the Wyoming plane crash has left a profound void in the gospel music community and beyond. The investigation by the NTSB will provide further insights, but the immediate focus remains on supporting the families and friends affected by this tragic event. The resilience displayed by those left behind highlights the enduring impact of the lives and legacies that were sadly cut short.
