South Dakota Tribe Revises Banishment Of Gov. Noem

 January 22, 2025

In a significant development, the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe has reversed its decision to ban South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem from its reservation, following a public apology that addressed remarks previously viewed as offensive by tribal members.

The lifting of the ban aligns with Noem's ongoing Senate confirmation process for a position within the Department of Homeland Security, The Hill reported.

The Tribe officially announced on Friday that it had decided to revoke the ban on Gov. Noem. Previously, she faced restrictions from entering the reservation land and penalties imposed as a response to her controversial statements regarding tribal communities.

Tribe’s Executive Committee Lifts Ban

The tribe's executive committee and leadership council removed the restrictions. A letter dated Tuesday revealed their decision to lift the ban.

Noem's comments, which many interpreted as critical of the tribe, prompted the original prohibition. She suggested that the reservations served as "safe havens" for Mexican drug cartels and accused tribal leaders of personally benefiting from these activities.

Following these statements, the tribe and several others took decisive action by barring Noem from their lands. In total, she faced bans from nine tribes, escalating tensions between herself and the native communities.

Noem’s Apology Influences Decision

Gov. Noem issued a public apology earlier, attempting to mend relations with the tribe. In response to the situation, Anthony Reider, one of the tribe's leaders, mentioned that her apology was a stipulation within the resolution aiming to repair the damage caused.

Reider acknowledged that Noem not only explained her standpoint but also sincerely apologized if her previous comments had offended. He pointed out the importance of this gesture in their decision-making process.

Moreover, Reider also noted that Noem sought advice on communicating in a more considerate manner going forward, a step that seemed to resonate positively with the tribe.

Timing With Senate Confirmation

The timing of the ban's removal is particularly noteworthy as it coincides with Gov. Noem's Senate questioning for her nomination by President-elect Trump. She is under consideration for the role of head of the Department of Homeland Security.

This development underscores the ongoing complexities in the relationship between the state government and tribal communities. Tensions were first exacerbated in 2019, reflecting a long-standing discord.

Despite the lifting of the ban by the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, it remains uncertain whether other tribes will follow suit and alter their stance regarding Gov. Noem.

Impact Of Reservations On South Dakota

South Dakota is significantly affected by the politics surrounding its reservations, which make up approximately 12% of the state's geographical area. These areas often become focal points in the state's socio-political landscape.

Gov. Noem's earlier comments had a broader impact not only on her relationship with the tribes but also on the public perception of her leadership. Addressing these issues is crucial for state officials and tribes alike.

The mutual goal remains to foster a harmonious coexistence and understanding between the state and the tribal authorities.

Future Implications For Tribal Relations

The lifting of the ban by one tribe marks a step forward in potentially restoring dialogue and cooperation. Whether this signals a shift in broader tribal relationships with the state government is yet to be determined.

Gov. Noem's forthcoming role, if confirmed, will demand an ability to navigate sensitive cultural and political issues, something her recent experience may aid in.

The development with the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe will likely be a focal point as Gov. Noem continues to navigate her political career and diplomatic relations within the state.
