Kamala Harris reveals tense call with Joe Biden ahead of 2024 Trump debate

 September 20, 2025

In a startling revelation from her upcoming memoir, Kamala Harris, former vice president and 2024 Democratic Party presidential nominee, shares a tense phone call with then-President Joe Biden just hours before her pivotal debate against Donald Trump, as People reports.

This memoir, titled 107 Days, offers a candid look at Harris's historic 107-day campaign, her complex relationship with Biden and his team, and a critical moment of distraction on debate day in Philadelphia.

Harris announced her memoir in July 2024, promising a behind-the-scenes account of her campaign journey after Biden endorsed her as the Democratic nominee following his withdrawal from the presidential race on July 21.

Unveiling campaign secrets in new memoir

In her video announcement, Harris expressed hope that sharing her experiences would provide insight into her lessons learned and the path forward for the nation.

The memoir, set to be published on September 23, 2024, by Simon & Schuster, is already available for preorder.

Starting Sept. 24, Harris will embark on a 15-city book tour across the US, Canada, and England to discuss her vision for an alternative future.

Tense exchange unfolds

On Sept. 10, 2024, as Harris prepared for her debate with Trump in a Philadelphia hotel room, she received a call from Biden around 4:45 p.m., hours before the 9 p.m. event.

Biden initially wished her well but quickly shifted to a colder tone, raising rumors he’d heard from his brother about Harris speaking ill of him.

He mentioned that these rumors had soured opinions among influential figures in Philadelphia, a key area in a crucial swing state, though he claimed not to believe them himself.

Biden’s concerns, Harris' frustrations

Biden suggested Harris should be aware of the talk, hinting her team might have pushed her to create distance from him, as she recalls in her memoir: “[Biden] wasn’t inclined to believe it, he claimed, but he thought I should know.”

Harris, eager to resolve the issue, requested a face-to-face meeting with the powerful Philadelphians to set the record straight.

However, Biden then turned the focus to his own debate history with Trump, mentioning a past win and excusing his June 2024 performance by saying he “wasn’t feeling well.”

Distraction unfolds on critical night

He also insisted his poor showing in that final debate hadn’t damaged his standing with voters, a point Harris found irrelevant at the time.

Frustrated, Harris later wrote, “I just couldn’t understand why he would call me, right now, and make it all about himself.”

She admitted to being distracted by worries over political heavyweights in Philadelphia, confessing in her memoir, “I was barely listening,” as her husband, Doug Emhoff, noticed her anger and urged her to refocus on the debate ahead.
