Suspicious Devices Found at Ballot Box Fires in 2 States

 October 30, 2024

Authorities in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, are investigating deliberately ignited fires at ballot boxes that occurred on Monday.

The incidents have prompted officials to consider whether the conflagrations were politically driven acts or efforts to sow discord in the lead-up to an election, as the Daily Mail reports.

Investigations Point to Arson at Ballot Boxes

Fire emergencies were declared in both cities after officials discovered that ballot boxes had been set ablaze. At the scenes of these fires, devices labeled with 'Free Gaza' were found, raising suspicions about the motivations behind the acts. Authorities are probing potential political motivations, with speculation about ties to pro-Palestinian activism.

The Portland Police Bureau and local officials in Vancouver have classified these acts as a direct challenge to the democratic process.

They emphasize the need to maintain the integrity of the ballot system, particularly in these politically sensitive times. Mike Benner, a spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau, confirmed that investigators are subjecting the incendiary devices to forensic tests, looking specifically for distinctive handwriting or any other unique attributes.

These destructive acts have not been isolated. Earlier in the month, a separate incident involving another hazardous device marked 'Free Palestine' took place in Vancouver. This earlier event is believed to be linked to the later, more damaging fires, suggesting a pattern.

Authorities Seek Help Locating Suspect Vehicle

Investigators are continuing their search for possible suspects connected to these troubling events. As part of their efforts, authorities have released an image showing a black Volvo S-60 missing its front number plate.

Police have not yet named any suspects in this growing investigation. However, they hope the public can assist in identifying any suspicious activity surrounding this vehicle.

The incident at the Portland ballot box saw quick action. An integrated fire suppression system effectively minimized damage, limiting destruction to just three ballots. This rapid response enabled officials to mitigate the potential impact of the fire on voter materials, serving as a comfort, albeit a small one.

In contrast, the situation in Vancouver was considerably more dire. The safety measures in place were unsuccessful, and hundreds of ballots were destroyed in the blaze.

This stark discrepancy is prompting discussion about the efficacy of safety protocols, and it appears the distinction in results may relate to where incendiary devices were placed -- inside the box in Portland versus externally in Vancouver.

Responses and Precautions in Affected Areas

People in Vancouver who deposited their ballots after late Saturday morning have been advised by authorities to request replacements. The destruction of ballots at this location has put residents on alert and prompted additional caution among voters and officials alike.

In response to these unsettling events, increased security measures have been adopted by Multnomah County, home to Portland. Officials have confirmed that around-the-clock private security patrols will now be present at ballot drop-off sites to protect voter submissions and deter any further acts of sabotage.

Meanwhile, the problems are not limited to the Pacific Northwest. In Pennsylvania, an unrelated probe seeks to uncover inaccuracies amid 2,500 suspicious voter registrations from last week. These national issues threaten to undermine faith in election integrity as voters across the country prepare to cast their ballots.

Potential Impact on Local and National Elections

The electoral stakes are particularly pronounced given that these events transpired mere days before the election. Although Oregon and Washington are historically blue states, the fires may cast a shadow on less publicized down-ballot elections.

A key race developing in the region involves the congressional contest in southwest Washington between Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Joe Kent.

The outcome of this race could shift due to concerns stemming from the ballot fires, with thousands of votes now compromised in Vancouver.

Law enforcement officials have expressed their determination to uncover the driving forces behind these attacks. The situation has stirred anxiety as the election nears, prompting calls for greater public vigilance and the need for unity against any threats to democratic norms.
