Taxpayers pay $151 billion yearly as a result of illegal immigration: Study

 March 9, 2023

For all of the problems the United States has, it's interesting that it's still the number one country for those looking for a better way of life. Unfortunately, the American taxpayer is being saddled with the financial burden resulting from those who choose to enter the country through illegal means.

The financial burden of illegal immigration on American taxpayers

Illegal immigration is costing American taxpayers $150.7 billion per year, according to the Federation for American Reform (FAIR) report on Wednesday.

The United States is seeing a record-high number of migrants attempting to cross the southern border illegally, according to Pew Research.

The number of encounters at the border reported from October 2022 through January 2023 has topped more than $1 million, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The United States has the largest number of migrants and immigrants in the world.

The number of permanent migrants the U.S. received in 2021 was 833,900, according to US News.

The total number of immigrants in the U.S. as of 2020 is 51 million, which is 19% of the world's population, according to Citizen Path.

Some specific costs to American taxpayers because of illegal immigration

"The costs of providing for millions of people who have no legal right to be in the U.S. continues to grow at an alarming rate," Federation for American Immigration Reform President Dan Stein told The Daily Wire.

"Most of this enormous financial burden has been inflicted on taxpayers by the open borders advocates at every level of government," he added.

Some of the federal expenses resulting from illegal immigrants include $23.1 billion in medical costs, which includes Medicaid expenses incurred from illegal immigrants giving birth to their children in America, which then have to be educated.

The total cost to educate the children of illegal immigrants is $73.3 billion.

The overall cost spent on illegal immigrants for welfare expenses, which includes food and housing assistance, is $11.6 billion.

The United States spends $25.1 billion on its border enforcement and border protection.

In addition, $21.8 billion is spent on law enforcement and justice activities.

Illegal immigrants do not provide a return on the costs to American Taxpayers

Many times, illegal immigrants aren't paying back into the system because they find work opportunities that allow them to receive cash payments for their work, often referred to as "working under the table."

The Biden administration alone has allowed for about 5.5 million migrants to enter the United States.

"Not only is the Biden administration refusing to rein-in illegal immigration or remove the people who are breaking our laws, they are promulgating policies that actually encourage more of it while offering new protections and benefits to those who settle here illegally,” Stein told The Daily Mail.

"Likewise, a growing number of states and localities create their own costly magnets for illegal aliens by declaring themselves sanctuaries and offering new benefits and services," he said.

While Title 42 has allowed border agents a certain amount of empowerment to attempt to slow the flood of immigrants, Title 42 is anticipated to end on May 11, 2023 unless the Supreme Court finds a way to rule on a Republican-led move to keep it implemented, according to NBC News.
