Tim Walz Reflects on Election Loss: 'Thought We Were Ready'
In a recent interview with KSTP-TV, Gov. Tim Walz shared his surprise at the November election results, in which he and Kamala Harris were defeated by Donald Trump and JD Vance.
This marked the first time since 2004 that the Democratic Party ticket lost the popular vote, and Walz recounted feeling momentum and optimism during the campaign, only to face a different reality on Election Day, as Fox News reports.
Initial Reactions to Election Outcome
"It felt like at the rallies, at the things I was going to, the shops I was going in, that the momentum was our way, and it obviously wasn’t at the end," Walz expressed.
He added, "So yeah, I was a little surprised. I thought we had a positive message, and I thought the country was ready for that."
The experience of running on a national ticket was a privilege, according to Walz, who enjoyed traveling across America and engaging with its diverse communities.
"It was a privilege to be asked to serve with Vice President Harris. Certainly got to see America!" he remarked.
Reflections on the Campaign Trail
Despite the loss, Walz viewed his participation in the campaign positively, although he pondered whether different strategies might have altered the outcome.
"As I said in this campaign when you asked the question, ‘Were there things you could have done differently?' Since we lost, the answer is obviously yes. On this one, I did my best," he stated thoughtfully.
His insights into the campaign's internal dynamics were supported by David Plouffe, a senior adviser, who revealed on Pod Save America that their own polling never showed them leading, contrary to late September and early October public polls.
Insights from Senior Campaign Adviser
"I think it surprised people because there were these public polls that came out in late September, early October, showing us with leads that we never saw," Plouffe commented, adding that the Election Day did not deliver the breaks necessary for a Democratic win.
"We didn’t get the breaks we needed on Election Day," he concluded, highlighting the unpredictability and ultimate disappointment of the campaign's end.
Looking Ahead: Walz's Return to Minnesota
Returning to his role as governor, Walz is eager to continue his duties in Minnesota.
"Coming back here now and having the privilege to do this work feels really good," he shared, emphasizing his commitment to his gubernatorial responsibilities and the upcoming legislative session.
As he settles back into his state duties, Walz remains optimistic about his future in governance, despite the national electoral defeat.
His leadership in Minnesota continues to be his primary focus, where he feels his efforts can make a significant impact.
Walz's Philosophical Take on Political Loss
"History will write that," Walz said reflectively when asked if he thought he helped or hurt the Harris campaign.
This statement sums up his philosophical approach to his role in the election -- a recognition that only time will truly reveal the impact of their campaign.
Despite the setbacks, Walz's outlook remains positive, focusing on the opportunities and lessons learned from a challenging and high-stakes political race.
