Bodycam footage from PA rooftop reveals confusion surrounding Trump shooting

 July 24, 2024

A shocking assassination attempt occurred when former President Trump was shot by a rooftop shooter during a speech.

Trump was targeted while addressing supporters in Butler, Pennsylvania, leading to the death of the attacker and the resignation of the Secret Service Director, with bodycam footage now shedding more light on what occurred, as Fox News reports.

Bodycam Footage Released

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) released a three-minute bodycam video on social media showing the aftermath of the shooting. The body of the shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was captured in the footage.

The incident took place on a rooftop in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the attacker opened fire on the former president. The assailant was subsequently neutralized by snipers shortly after the attack.

The video, obtained from the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit, displays Crooks’ body lying next to a trail of blood and a rifle. However, Fox News Digital chose to blur the image of his body in their coverage.

Confusion Among Officials

The footage captured a man, who appeared to be a Secret Service agent, engaging in a conversation with local authorities about a nearby bicycle. There was some uncertainty over whether the shooter was connected to the bicycle found at the scene.

In the video, a voice off-camera was heard confirming the shooter’s identity, “Beaver County snipers seen him, sent the pictures out. This is him.”

Another law enforcement officer pointed out the weapon, stating, “Rifle’s right there.”

Investigation Continues

The footage also revealed a Secret Service agent directing the detention of two other individuals as part of the ongoing investigation.

“Detain those guys. Find out who they know. Who they are. Whatever,” the agent instructed.

Amid the confusion surrounding the bicycle, someone was heard asking, “Was he on that bike?” To which another replied, “We don’t know.”

The Secret Service agent further clarified that there was another individual detained who may have been the owner of the bicycle, stating, “Our guy that was just up here told me that there was a guy detained who is the owner of the bike. I said ‘no, no that’s the owner of the bike.’”

Resignation of Secret Service Director

The aftermath of the incident has led to significant fallout within the United States Secret Service.

Due to apparent security lapses that allowed Crooks to position himself on a rooftop and carry out the attack, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on Tuesday.

In the video, a Secret Service agent was also heard saying, "I'm trying to get clear information to relay back to D.C." This underscores the level of disarray among the officials on-site during the incident.

Response from Officials

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident to determine how Crooks was able to carry out his plan. The identity and affiliations of the two individuals detained remain unclear as investigations proceed.

The shocking nature of the event has drawn attention to the complexities and challenges faced by security agencies in protecting high-profile individuals. This incident has prompted calls for a thorough review of security protocols.

The assassination attempt on former President Trump has also sparked widespread reactions from political figures and the public. Discussions are ongoing about the potential implications for future security measures at public events.
