Trump Backs Johnson in Imminent House Speaker Vote

 December 31, 2024

In a crucial political move, Donald Trump, fresh from his recent presidential election victory, has expressed unwavering support for Mike Johnson in the imminent House speakership race, stirring an already dynamic political landscape.

Following his 2024 election success, President-elect Trump stamps his endorsement on Johnson, despite the potential face-off from within their party amidst a narrow Republican majority in the House, Fox News reported.

Trump and his Vice-president, JD Vance, previously notched up a decisive victory in securing seven swing states, 317 electoral votes, not to mention bagging the popular vote ticket.

The momentous win was notably delayed by a protracted vote certification process in California, which took weeks after Election Day to conclude.

Challenges Await Johnson Within the House

A rocky path seemingly lies ahead for Johnson, as rumblings of internal fissures clearly reveal a resistance building against him.

Moreover, there is a likelihood of opposition from four to 10 Republicans in the speaker's race set for Jan. 3, which suggests the speakership race might not be a straightforward ascendancy.

In addition to these internal issues, the House recently faced significant legislative obstacles. A hefty 1,500-page spending bill, followed shortly by a 116-page bill, both fell short of approval in Congress.

As a result, the House only barely dodged a holiday government shutdown, managing to pass a bill that was more readily supported by Democrats than Republicans.

Divisions Over H1-B Visas and Slim Majority

A significant source of division within the Republican Party is the issue of H1-B visas. Trump's DOGE co-leaders Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk openly support H1-B visas as a tool to hire foreign specialized workers, highlighting diverging opinions among Republicans.

In addition, Republicans hold a mere five-seat majority in the House, further stressing the precariousness of their command. Internal opposition paired with this slim majority could present considerable challenges for Johnson's speakership.

Trump's Accusations Against Harris' Campaign

Adding further intrigue to recent events, Trump publicly lambasted Vice-President Kamala Harris for allegedly using millions of dollars in celebrity endorsements for her failed presidential campaign.

Campaign finance records support his allegation, suggesting the Harris campaign forked out $1 million to Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions.

Additionally, FEC filings showed two separate donations, each of $250,000, made by the Harris campaign to Al Sharpton’s nonprofit organization in September and October.

Trump voiced his endorsement of Johnson on Truth Social Monday, commending him as a "good, hard-working, religious man." He predicted Johnson would do the "right thing" and stated that with Johnson at the helm, they would "continue to WIN."

Trump Lauds Republicans' Campaign

Continuing his praise of Republican campaign strategies, he added, "We ran a flawless campaign, having spent FAR LESS, with lots of money left over." He lambasted Democrats for their expenditure and results. He accused Democrats of squandering 2.5 Billion Dollars, a significant portion unaccounted for, with some allegedly spent on illegal endorsements.

Undoubtedly, this endorsement intensifies the potency of the upcoming speakership race, with the political arena waiting with bated breath for the outcome on Jan. 3.
