Trump Calls CBS Interview Editing A 'Scam'

 October 11, 2024

Former President Donald Trump has accused CBS and its program "60 Minutes" of editing an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris in a manner that favors Democrats, calling it a form of election interference. He urged that CBS should have their broadcasting license revoked, suggesting that Democrats should concede the election due to these allegations. This controversy surrounds an interview where Harris' responses were significantly shortened in a broadcast compared to the original recording.

In a statement on Thursday, Trump alleged that edits made to the interview with Harris were a "giant Fake News Scam," further questioning the integrity of CBS and calling for punitive actions against the network, Newsmax reported.

The focal point of the criticism lies in how the interview discussion with Harris about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was edited. The unedited clip, made public on Oct. 6, showed Harris providing an elaborate response regarding U.S. diplomatic efforts and backing of Israel. However, the next day on Oct. 7, the abridged aired version cut down Harris’ comprehensive remarks to simpler statements.

Details of Harris' Interview With "60 Minutes"

During the televised interview, questions posed to Harris centered on the influence the United States holds over Netanyahu's decisions. Harris originally stated that the aid provided by the U.S. has helped Israel defend itself, elaborating on the country's significant diplomatic moves influenced by American support.

On the air, they significantly condensed her detailed discourse to more general comments about ongoing efforts in diplomatic communications with Israel. Trump's press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, argued that the editing aimed to minimize the impact of Harris’ remarks, which she described as a "word salad."

Newsmax conducted inquiries into the situation, reaching out to CBS News as well as the Harris campaign for comment. However, there were no immediate responses from either party regarding the editing decisions or the controversy that ensued.

Trump's Reaction and Public Statements

Reacting on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump disparaged the editing of the interview as utterly deceptive.  The former president’s remarks continued, emphasizing the illegality he perceives in CBS's actions and urging revocation of the network’s license. According to Trump, this incident represents an "unprecedented scandal" in media manipulation concerning political narratives.

Trump also called out CBS for claims of scheduling inaccuracies, noting that he declined to appear on the show due to disagreements over fact-checking measures. His spokesperson, Steven Cheung, clarified that there was no arrangement or commitment by Trump to participate in the program.

Responses From Harris' Side and CBS

An aide from the Harris campaign asserted they did not have authority over CBS's production choices, distancing the campaign from the network’s editorial decisions. Despite the controversy, neither CBS News nor Harris' campaign have provided detailed statements regarding the interview’s modifications or the ensuing accusations by Trump.

This dispute highlights broader tensions between political figures and media outlets, questioning the role and responsibility of broadcasters in presenting information about political candidates and public figures.

The ongoing debate over media integrity continues to drive conversations about transparency and election interference as key issues approaching future elections.
