Trump calls on Europe to terminate oil purchases from Russia

 September 5, 2025

In a bold diplomatic move, President Donald Trump has urged European leaders to terminate their oil purchases from Russia, as Breitbart reports. This strategy aims to sever the financial flow fueling Russia's war efforts in Ukraine.

During a conference with leaders from the "Coalition of the Willing," Trump proposed stringent economic sanctions against Russia and China to curb their wartime activities.

The conversation, initially disclosed by Reuters and confirmed by Breitbart News, brought together influential figures, including French President Emmanuel Macron. They focused on economic strategies to impede Russia's war capabilities and China's financial support thereof.

Macron, Trump discuss strategy

A White House official outlined the essence of the discussion: "President Macron and European leaders invited President Trump to their meeting. He emphasized the necessity for Europe to halt oil acquisitions from Russia, stating a dramatic figure of €1.1 billion in EU fuel sales to Russia over a year."

Trump also aimed his economic strategies toward China, a crucial backer of Russia during this conflict. He stressed the importance of imposing economic pressures to deter China's involvement.

The leaders deliberated these points thoroughly, showing a united front in the economic battle against the wartime alliance of Russia and China.

Trump slams Russian war tactics

Expressing his dissatisfaction in an aired interview on the Scott Jennings Radio Show, Trump lamented the loss of life resulting from the conflict: "Thousands of people are dying. They’re not Americans, but Russians and Ukrainians, and it’s a war that makes no sense."

Furthermore, Trump suggested that the ongoing conflict would have been averted under his administration, blaming what he referred to as a rigged election for his absence during these critical times.

The president's comments underscore his frustration and the geopolitical intricacies linked to America's stance on the Ukrainian crisis.

Sanctions imposed on India

Turning his attention to India, Trump last month enacted a significant 50% tariff on the country due to its continued oil trade with Russia. This bold move aims to curb Russia’s economic inflows from one of its significant oil purchasers.

During a tense exchange with a Polish reporter, Trump defended his actions robustly: "Would you say that putting secondary sanctions on India was no action? That cost hundreds of billions of dollars to Russia."

He emphasized the economic blow dealt to Russia through these tariffs and hinted at more severe measures if necessary: "I haven’t done phase two yet or phase three…so don’t tell me about that."

Diplomatic engagements, future moves

Amid these events, Trump was also seen discussing potential further sanctions against Russia in a meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki in the Oval Office. Despite criticisms, he reiterated the depth and impact of his sanctions strategies.

Meanwhile, key global leaders -- including Indian President Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping -- participated in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China, demonstrating the complex international alignments.

The dynamics of international relations and economic strategies discussed in these meetings are likely to shape the forthcoming diplomatic landscapes and potential resolutions to the ongoing conflicts initiated by Russia.
