Trump Calls on GOP Senators to Block Biden's Judge Picks Ahead of Inauguration

 November 20, 2024

In an emphatic appeal, President-elect Donald Trump has urged Republican senators to stay in Washington to curb the advancement of judicial selections by Democrats during the lame-duck session.

This call from Trump comes following a contentious confirmation of a Biden-selected judge amid Republican efforts to stall the confirmation process, as Breitbart reports.

Trump's Plea on Truth Social

On Truth Social, Trump delivered his message, urging the GOP to stand firm against Democratic plans to install judges before the new administration takes office.

His comments came after Senate Democrats successfully confirmed Judge Embry Kidd to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in a narrowly decided vote.

The confirmation process saw several GOP senators absent from Washington, which highlighted the challenges Republicans face in delaying the confirmation of Biden's judicial nominees.

Kidd, nominated by Biden, has been a focal point of controversy. His appointment was met with disapproval from his home-state senators and other concerned parties. Specifically, he was criticized for not revealing judicial decisions that were later reversed, especially involving cases of child sex offenders.

Judicial Nominee's Past Decisions Scrutinized

Moreover, Kidd faced scrutiny for contributing to a law review piece that deemed capital punishments for child rape as racially biased. Despite the criticisms and the absences among Republican senators, Democrats have proven capable of advancing their judicial agenda.

The Democratic Party majority, consisting of 51 senators along with Vice President Kamala Harris ready to cast tie-breaking votes, gives them a strategic advantage in judicial confirmations.

Even though Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) did not cast a vote during Kidd's confirmation, his participation could have been solicited should it have been necessary.

Republican Efforts to Delay Confirmations

In a bid to delay the confirmation process, Republicans have been employing tactics aimed at prolonging Senate business. This includes initiating roll call votes on motions that are usually procedural, an effort that delayed proceedings late into the night.

The GOP's strategy to "Show Up and Hold the Line," in Trump's words, is an attempt to prevent further judicial installations before Biden's term concludes.

Despite these efforts, the Democrat majority continues to push forward with their plan, preparing more votes on judicial nominees before the upcoming weekend.

Continued Focus on Judicial Nominations

The focus on judicial nominees is expected to dominate the Senate's agenda for the remainder of the year, as indicated by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's preparation for additional confirmation votes.

This ongoing partisan conflict over judicial appointments underscores the high stakes and strategic maneuvers employed by both parties in the waning days before Biden's term ends.

"The Democrats are trying to stack the Courts with Radical Left Judges," Trump emphasized on social media, a statement echoing his belief that the current administration is hurrying to finalize their judicial agenda.

Ongoing Partisan Tensions Over Nominations

As the political theater unfolds, the strategies being employed by Republicans to counteract these confirmations highlight the tension and urgency surrounding judicial appointments.

The Republican absence during key votes serves as a crucial aspect of the ongoing tug-of-war, with the Democrats' strategic advantage in numbers playing a significant role in the outcomes.

Looking ahead, the battle over judicial confirmations is set to continue, with both sides vigorously pursuing their respective goals regarding the federal judiciary.
