Trump-Endorsed Florida Official Steps Down, Seeks Gaetz's Congressional Seat

 November 27, 2024

In a significant political shift, Jimmy Patronis has resigned from his role as Florida's Chief Financial Officer to pursue a congressional seat.

Jimmy Patronis, backed by President-elect Trump, resigns to run for Florida's 1st Congressional District seat, following Matt Gaetz's departure, The Hill reported.

Jimmy Patronis, who has served as Florida’s CFO for nearly eight years, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to Governor Ron DeSantis and Secretary of State Cord Byrd. His resignation marks a strategic move to enter the race for the congressional seat in Florida’s 1st Congressional District.

Following his announcement, President-elect Donald Trump endorsed Patronis for the congressional seat through a post on Truth Social. Trump praised Patronis' dedication to supporting policies that aim to strengthen the economy, secure borders, and enhance military support.

This endorsement led to a swift response in the political landscape of the 1st Congressional District, causing several candidates to withdraw their candidacies and express their support for Patronis.

Local Political Scene Reacts to Patronis' Campaign Launch

On the same day of his resignation, state Rep. Joel Rudman also resigned from his position to run for the same seat. Rudman's entry adds another dynamic to the primary race scheduled for January 28.

Additionally, Nathan Nelson, a former Air Force veteran and director of military affairs for Matt Gaetz, declared his candidacy, ensuring a competitive primary. The special general election is set for April 1, turning the district's political scene into a closely watched event.

The 1st Congressional District is notably conservative, having shown strong support for Gaetz in the previous election where he secured 66% of the vote.

New Candidates Bring Fresh Dynamics to Florida's Political Landscape

Jimmy Patronis, in his campaign announcement, expressed his honor in serving as CFO and his readiness to take on new challenges in Congress. He emphasized his commitment to working alongside President-elect Trump to address key national issues.

Trump, supporting Patronis, outlined a vision of economic growth, border security, and a strong defense for constitutional rights, including the Second Amendment. His statement on Truth Social highlighted the critical roles expected from Patronis if elected.

Joel Rudman's resignation statement focused on his dedication to the constituents, suggesting that his decision was motivated by the opportunity to further serve and improve the nation.

Community and Candidates Prepare for Heated Primary

The upcoming Republican primary is garnering significant attention due to the involvement of high-profile endorsements and the strategic resignations of key candidates. It reflects a pivotal moment for the local GOP as they aim to maintain their strong presence in the district.

Nathan Nelson's military background and his direct connection to the previous congressman bring a unique perspective to the race, appealing to voters who prioritize military and veteran affairs.

The political shifts and the new candidacies are setting the stage for a highly anticipated primary, as the candidates prepare to campaign on issues that resonate with the conservative base of the 1st Congressional District.
