Trump fundraising after Georgia mugshot is now up to $20 million for the month

 August 30, 2023

Former President Donald Trump's campaign has reportedly raised over $20 million in August, with more than $7 million coming after his booking at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia.

Trump's campaign announced that it raised more than $7 million after Trump was booked at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia on charges related to scheming to overturn the 2020 election in the state. This significant donation haul underscores how Trump's legal challenges have been a fundraising boon for his campaign, despite his political operation spending tens of millions on his defense, as Fox News reported.

Trump's campaign gets a massive fundraising boost

Spokesperson Steven Cheung announced on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that on the day following Trump's booking, the campaign brought in $4.18 million, making it the highest-grossing day of his campaign so far.

This record haul highlights how Trump's legal woes have been a fundraising boon for his campaign.

The news comes at a time when Trump's political operation has spent tens of millions on his defense costs.

Despite the mounting legal charges, Trump's standing in the Republican presidential primary has not been impacted.

He is routinely beating his rivals by 30 to 50 points in polls.

Trump described his appearance for the mugshot as a "terrible experience" and "not a comfortable feeling."

But his campaign immediately capitalized on its fundraising potential.

Trump's mugshot merchandise goes viral

The campaign used the mugshot in fundraising pitches to supporters and released a new line of merchandise featuring the image.

This merchandise includes shot glasses, mugs, bumper stickers, a signed poster, and even bobblehead dolls.

The shot of Trump showed him with a red tie, glistening hair, and an icy scowl.

In the past three weeks, Trump has raised nearly $20 million, a period that coincides with his indictment in federal and state cases connected to his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

Additionally, while Trump raised more than $53 million during the first half of 2023, his political committees have paid out at least $59.2 million to about 100 lawyers and law firms since January 2021.

Legal challenges

Trump's legal challenges include charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Also, he is expected to plead not guilty at his arraignment in Georgia scheduled for September.
