Trump issues another deadline extension for required sale of TikTok

 June 20, 2025

In a surprising development, President Donald Trump has once again extended the deadline to ban the popular app TikTok in the United States.

The extension -- the third of its kind -- allows TikTok to operate until Sept. 19, providing ByteDance with more time to sell its stake or face a ban, as Breitbart reports.

On Thursday, Trump announced an additional extension of the ban deadline.

This development continues the U.S. government's ongoing scrutiny over TikTok and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

The app, which enjoys a massive user base in the United States, faced an uncertain future when legislation was signed last year.

Legislation signed under Biden

The legislation led by President Joe Biden in April 2024 required ByteDance to relinquish its stake in the popular video platform. The company was given nine months to complete this process or risk the app facing a ban in the United States.

As Trump took office, however, he paused the enforcement of this legislation for 75 days, altering its course significantly.

This pause was extended for the second time in April under Trump's direction. The imminent expiration, set for Thursday, prompted Trump's latest decision to renew the deadline.

The new deadline now extends the timeline by another 90 days.

Trump remained optimistic about reaching a favorable resolution regarding TikTok's future. He suggested potential deals while acknowledging the necessity for approval from China.

During recent statements, Trump expressed a belief that President Xi Jinping would eventually greenlight such arrangements.

Exploring various options for platform

Among the proposals discussed for TikTok is its potential involvement in America's planned sovereign wealth fund.

These considerations reflect a range of strategies that might preserve the app's operation in the U.S. market.

Trump also conveyed interest in a range of various partnership opportunities.

A high-profile suggestion includes the potential acquisition by Oracle, led by its CTO, Larry Ellison.

This option, among others, illustrates the broad range of discussions surrounding TikTok's future ownership and management.

This multifaceted approach under Trump’s administration has drawn the attention of numerous stakeholders.

From business to geopolitical circles, the handling of TikTok remains a point of considerable discussion and debate.
