Trump May Include a Democrat in His Cabinet, Vance Reveals

 September 1, 2024

Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance declared that former President Donald Trump is open to including a Democrat in his Cabinet should he win the November election.

Sen. JD Vance highlighted a bipartisan gesture similar to that promised by Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, Yahoo News reported.

During an appearance on "Fox and Friends," Vance shared that Trump's potential appointment of a Democrat aligns with recent bipartisan endorsements from figures like RFK Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard.

Vance Cites Big Tent Approach in 2024 Campaign

Gabbard, a former Democratic representative from Hawaii who left the party in 2022, alongside RFK Jr., has publicly supported Trump, illustrating a broadening of Trump's appeal.

Simultaneously, Vice President Kamala Harris expressed a corresponding intention in a CNN interview, promising to appoint a Republican to her Cabinet to foster a diversified advisory group.

Harris, in her conversation with Dana Bash, emphasized the value of varied perspectives in governance, particularly for crafting major national policies.

Historical Context of Cross-Party Cabinet Appointments

Historically, Presidents have occasionally appointed members from the opposition to demonstrate unity and continuity. Obama's inclusion of Republicans like Robert Gates and Ray LaHood, as well as Trump's retention of Obama appointee Robert Work early in his administration, are notable examples.

This tradition underscores the strategic importance of such appointments in U.S. presidential administrations, aiming to bridge partisan divides.

Vance pointed out that Trump's move would be in line with efforts to unify the country by bringing diverse views to the table.

Vance Discusses Trump's 2024 Policy Priorities

In detailing the ethos behind Trump's 2024 campaign, Vance described it as a "common sense big tent movement" that focuses on essential policy agreements rather than uniformity.

"We don't agree on everything, of course not everybody who votes for Donald Trump is going to agree with every policy issue, but we agree on the basics," Vance stated in the interview.

The senator then outlined the campaign's key focuses, which include lowering American energy prices, boosting domestic manufacturing, and tightening border security to prevent illegal drug trafficking.

Praise for Bipartisan Efforts in Antitrust Enforcement

In a gesture of bipartisan approval, Vance also commended Lina Khan, a Biden administration member and the Federal Trade Commission Chair, for her effective antitrust enforcement against tech giants.

His praise for Khan is seen as part of a broader acknowledgment of competent leadership across party lines. It enhances the narrative of a collaborative political climate proposed by both presidential campaigns.

Vance's remarks on "Fox and Friends" and Harris's comments on CNN reflect a strategic emphasis on bipartisan cooperation that both campaigns seem to be championing this election cycle.
