Trump mourns death of National Guardsman in wake of DC shooting

 November 28, 2025

A shocking act of violence near the White House has left the nation reeling, as a young National Guardsman paid the ultimate price while serving her country.

On Wednesday, a calculated shooting just steps from the heart of Washington, D.C., claimed the life of 21-year-old Sarah Beckstrom of the West Virginia National Guard, injured her fellow guardsman Andrew Wolfe, and resulted in the arrest of a suspect now facing severe legal consequences, as Breitbart reports.

The tragedy struck as Beckstrom and Wolfe, both sworn in less than a day before, were stationed in the capital, embodying the courage and commitment of our nation’s protectors.

Devastating Loss for West Virginia Family

Beckstrom, who began her service in June 2023, was a proud West Virginian, and her untimely death has left her community and state in profound mourning.

Her fellow guardsman, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, from the same National Guard unit, survived the brutal attack, but the void left by Beckstrom’s passing is a wound felt by all who knew her dedication.

These young patriots were deployed to D.C. under an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, tasked with securing the nation’s capital during a time of heightened tension.

White House on Alert After Shooting

Immediately following the attack, the White House was placed under lockdown, a jarring precaution that underscored the gravity of the threat, as noted by Breitbart News.

On Thursday, President Trump addressed the American people, delivering the somber news of Beckstrom’s death with a tone of deep sorrow and a call for national unity in the face of such a loss.

“This heinous assault was an act of evil and act of hatred and an act of terror,” Trump declared, emphasizing that this was not just a crime against individuals, but against the very soul of our country.

Suspect Captured After Deliberate Attack

The suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was apprehended shortly after the shooting, bringing a quick end to the immediate danger but leaving behind a trail of heartbreak and unanswered questions.

Lakanwal, who entered the United States in September 2021 through the Biden administration’s Operation Allies Welcome program after the Afghanistan withdrawal, allegedly drove across the country from his home in Bellingham, Washington, with the capital as his specific target.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeannine Pirro confirmed the intentional nature of the violence, stating that Lakanwal carried out the attack using a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver, a chilling detail in an already tragic story.

Call for Justice in Wake of Tragedy

On Thursday, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Lakanwal, a clear message that acts of violence against those who safeguard our nation will face the sternest of consequences.

While the wheels of justice begin to turn, they offer little comfort to a nation grieving a young woman who stood on the front lines for our safety, nor do they ease the pain of her family and fellow guardsmen who must carry on without her.

As we reflect on this heartbreaking incident, it serves as a sobering reminder that the protection of our capital and the honor of those who defend it must remain paramount, especially when misguided policies and progressive priorities can leave us exposed to such calculated acts of violence.
