Trump Now Leading By 3 Points Over Harris: Poll

 August 4, 2024

Former President Donald Trump has garnered a 3-point lead over Vice President Kamala Harris in a national poll conducted by Harvard-Harris.

The latest survey favoring the former president highlights shifting voter preferences following President Joe Biden's recent withdrawal from the presidential race and an assassination attempt on Trump's life, as Breitbart reports.

The poll, which took place from July 26 to 28, surveyed a total of 2,196 registered voters from across the nation.

According to the results, 48% of respondents indicated they would vote for Trump if the presidential election were held today, while 45% stated they would vote for Harris. The remaining 7% of voters remain undecided at this point.

The backdrop for this poll includes President Biden's decision to step down from his re-election bid. Upon announcing his withdrawal, Biden publicly endorsed Vice President Harris as the Democratic Party’s candidate for the presidential race.

Trump's Favorability Remains Divided Among Voters

The timing of the Harvard-Harris poll also comes in the wake of a significant incident on July 13 in which Trump was the victim of a shooting during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Despite this, 48% of voters maintain a "very favorable" or "favorable" view of Trump. However, an equal percentage, 48%, also hold a "very unfavorable" or "unfavorable" opinion of the former president.

In comparison, Harris garnered similar public sentiment, with 47% of voters expressing a "very favorable" or "favorable" view of her, and an identical percentage expressing "very unfavorable" or "unfavorable" views.

In addition to the Harvard-Harris results, a recent McLaughlin & Associates survey indicates Trump holding a two-point lead over Harris on the national scale. This margin mirrors Trump's previous lead over Biden prior to their debate back on June 27.

Biden's Withdrawal, Endorsement and Its Impact on Voter Sentiment

President Biden's surprise withdrawal from the election has had a profound impact on voter sentiments. His endorsement of Harris was a highly anticipated move within political circles and has undoubtedly influenced the poll results.

Despite this new dynamic in the race, voter attitudes towards both Trump and Harris show a nation deeply divided.

The detailed figures from the poll reveal how tightly contested an election would be between Trump and Harris.

This 3-point lead in the Harvard-Harris poll has prompted discussions about the potential strategies both camps might adopt as they prepare for a more intensive campaign phase.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, both Trump and Harris will likely focus on swaying the 7% of undecided voters, which could prove pivotal in the upcoming election. The undecided voters will be scrutinized in further polls to see any shifts in their leanings as election day approaches.

Analysis of Voter Preferences and Future Campaigns

The data showcases a nation on the brink of a hard-fought battle between the Republican and Democratic frontrunners.

While Trump's three-point lead provides him with a narrow advantage, the nearly equal favorability and unfavorability ratings for both candidates indicate that voter preferences could still be swayed significantly in the months leading up to the election.

Both candidates are expected to intensify their efforts to appeal to the middle-ground voters and solidify their base support. The incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, which could have swayed sympathy towards Trump, seems not to have significantly altered his favorability ratings, re-emphasizing the stark polarization in voter opinions.

Moving forward, it will be crucial for both campaigns to address key issues that resonate with the electorate. With President Biden’s endorsement, Harris could leverage Democratic support while Trump may capitalize on his past presidential experience and robust campaign strategy.
