Former Govt. Official: Trump Plans Prompt Intervention In Russia-Ukraine Conflict

 November 8, 2024

President-elect Donald Trump appears poised to swiftly address the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine through direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Kurt Volker, who previously served as the U.S. special envoy to Ukraine under Trump, recently revealed plans for the President-elect's approach once he assumes office, with Trump's strategy reportedly including a crucial phone call urging Putin to halt the hostilities immediately, as Newsmax reports.

During his tenure from 2017 to 2019, Volker was integral in American negotiations involving Ukraine. His insights suggest a robust stance from Trump is imminent, involving economic repercussions for Russia and a potential revamping of U.S. military aid strategies to Ukraine.

Volker Advocates for Strong Economic and Military Stance

Volker emphasized the necessity of the U.S. demonstrating significant strength to counter Putin's ambitions, which include the full annexation of Ukraine.

He proposed escalating U.S. oil and gas production to undermine the Russian economy.

Additionally, he mentioned a lend-lease program as a strategic countermeasure, allowing Ukraine to purchase U.S. weaponry to bolster its defense capabilities against Russian advances.

This strategy, according to Volker, would involve a substantial financial commitment but would be pivotal in deterring Russian aggression by signaling the high costs of continuing the war.

Concerns Over Trump's Past Admiration for Putin

Trump's previous praise of Putin has raised concerns regarding his ability to effectively manage diplomatic relations with Moscow.

Critics worry that his past admiration could influence his negotiation tactics and potentially compromise Ukraine's security.

Orysia Lutsevych from Chatham House expressed concerns over Trump's approach, suggesting that his fascination with Putin might allow the Kremlin to manipulate diplomatic engagements to their advantage.

Volker reiterated the urgency of Trump's initial actions, stating that an immediate and resolute communication with Putin is essential for a quick resolution to the conflict.

Proposed Changes to Ukraine's NATO Aspirations

A controversial aspect of Trump's proposed strategy includes delaying Ukraine's entry into NATO for two decades while maintaining ongoing support through munitions supplies.

The Wall Street Journal reported that alongside the NATO membership delay, an 800-mile demilitarized zone between Russia and Ukraine is also being considered as part of the peace strategy.

This plan aims to reduce immediate tensions and establish a buffer zone, which could help prevent further military escalations.

Trump's Approach Faces Scrutiny as Inauguration Looms

As Trump's inauguration approaches, the international community is watching developments closely.

The war in Ukraine will have been ongoing for nearly three years, and the proposed solutions by Trump signal significant shifts in U.S. foreign policy.

Experts like Volker believe that these measures, though controversial, are necessary to pressure Putin into negotiations that could lead to an end to the conflict.

However, the effectiveness of these strategies remains to be seen, with global and regional security stakes running high.
