U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reached an unprecedented level of worksite arrests during President Donald Trump's second term, and under his renewed approach, the agency has apprehended over 1,000 individuals working without authorization in just the first 100 days.

These ICE enforcement efforts and arrests facilitated by Trump mark a shift from the previous administration, reflecting a significant change in strategy regarding immigration employment practices, as Breitbart reports.

Under the Biden administration, such large-scale operations were put on hold. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had criticized these raids for redirecting resources away from meaningful employer investigations.

In an October 2021 memorandum, he highlighted the issue, noting that the raids did not focus on the exploitative employer practices at the heart of unauthorized employment.

Multi-agency coordination seen as key

In contrast, the Trump administration has reactivated these enforcement actions with vigor. ICE has resumed strategies that involve arrests, seizing assets, and imposing fines on employers found violating immigration laws.

One major operation targeted a Chinese money laundering group connected to providing illegal labor. This case showcases a strategy that involves coordination between multiple governmental bodies, ensuring all facets of the law are upheld.

Multi-agency efforts have resulted in significant legal actions. Working with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), ICE recently filed a civil complaint that led to seizing 14 properties, seven bank accounts, and 15 vehicles. These assets were linked to a money laundering network that provided undocumented labor to businesses.

The obligations of employers in the U.S. remain clear under federal law. Employers must verify the identity and work eligibility of their employees through Form I-9. Failure to comply can result in penalties ranging from fines to criminal charges, underscoring the importance of adhering to these regulations.

Nationwide crackdown underway

Such efforts are not confined to one region but are distributed nationwide. A notable operation in March occurred in Lake Charles, Louisiana, culminating in the apprehension of 11 unauthorized workers from Mexico, Nicaragua, and Ecuador. In February, a separate operation took place in New Jersey. This event saw ICE and various federal agencies working together to arrest 16 individuals at an import warehouse.

ICE officials express a different viewpoint. Robert Hammer, acting Executive Associate Director of ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations, highlighted that these efforts have resulted in the highest arrest rate in the division's history. Jared Murphey, acting ICE Detroit Special Agent in Charge, emphasized the collaborative approach of ICE and IRS in investigating a significant case. Murphey explained that the case revolves around a staffing company allegedly involved in money laundering and employing unauthorized workers.
