Trump pushes Republicans to end filibuster amid ongoing government shutdown

 November 7, 2025

President Donald Trump has dropped a political bombshell, reigniting the debate over the Senate filibuster with a bold call to scrap it entirely, as the Daily Wire reports.

Trump’s latest push, voiced during a Fox News interview and amplified on Truth Social, centers on eliminating the Senate’s 60-vote threshold to pass legislation, claiming it would secure Republican dominance while blaming Democrats for the ongoing government shutdown.

This isn’t the first time Trump has targeted the filibuster, but his renewed urgency comes as a government shutdown drags on, with Senate Democrats rejecting temporary funding bills over a dozen times in the past month.

Shutdown Stalemate Fuels Filibuster Fight

Democratic Party leaders argue their opposition to these continuing resolutions is about protecting healthcare subsidies, while Republicans counter that they’re simply trying to buy time for broader budget talks.

Amid this gridlock, Trump sees the filibuster as the real roadblock, insisting that a simple majority vote would let the GOP push through what he calls practical policies without endless obstruction.

It’s a high-stakes gamble, and even Trump admits it could backfire if Democrats regain Senate control down the line, a risk some of his own party members aren’t willing to take.

Trump’s Vision for Republican Dominance

In his Wednesday evening chat with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Trump didn’t mince words about the potential upside for his party.

“I think that if we got rid of the filibuster, we would approve so many good things, common-sense things, wonderful things that it would be hard to beat us,” Trump declared. Let’s unpack that: he’s banking on a legislative free-for-all, but is the GOP ready to ditch a rule that’s often shielded them from progressive overreach?

Earlier that week, on Tuesday, Trump took to Truth Social to double down, warning that the midterm elections could spell disaster for Republicans if the filibuster stays intact.

Midterm Warnings and Party Pushback

“The Democrats are far more likely to win the Midterms … if we don’t do the Termination of the Filibuster (The Nuclear Option!), because it will be impossible for Republicans to get Common Sense Policies done with these Crazed Democrat Lunatics being able to block everything by withholding their votes,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“FOR THREE YEARS, NOTHING WILL BE PASSED, AND REPUBLICANS WILL BE BLAMED,” he continued. That’s a dire prediction, but it sidesteps the inconvenient truth that some GOP senators value the filibuster as a brake on unchecked power -- regardless of who’s in charge.

Trump’s frustration is palpable, and it’s not hard to see why: the current 60-vote hurdle in the Senate often grinds legislation to a halt, especially when partisan lines are drawn as tightly as they are now.

Balancing Power with Long-Term Risks

Yet, even as he pushes for this seismic shift, Trump concedes that not all his allies are on board, with several Republican senators wary of a future where they might need the filibuster to block a progressive agenda.

Strip away the procedural jargon, and this debate is really about power -- how much the GOP can wield now, and how much they’re willing to risk later. It’s a classic case of short-term gain versus long-term pain, and the shutdown only sharpens the stakes.

For now, Trump’s call to action is a rallying cry for conservatives tired of seeing their priorities stalled, but whether it gains traction in a divided Senate remains anyone’s guess. The filibuster fight is far from over, and with midterms looming, the GOP might have to decide if they’re playing chess or checkers with this one.
