Trump relaunches $15B defamation case against New York Times

 October 17, 2025

Hold onto your hats, folks -- President Donald Trump is back in the legal ring with a staggering $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, refiled with a laser-focused complaint, as Fox News reports.

Thursday marked the resubmission of this colossal claim in the U.S. District Court for Florida’s Middle District in Tampa, aiming at the newspaper, key reporters, and a book publisher over alleged damaging falsehoods.

This isn’t Trump’s first jab in this bout; a federal judge tossed the original 85-page lawsuit last month for being overly verbose, mandating a cut to 40 pages within a 28-day window.

Trump trims filing

Trump’s legal team delivered, crafting a streamlined 40-page complaint that still demands $15 billion plus punitive damages for good measure.

The suit targets two 2024 articles from the Times and a 2023 book, Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success, written by reporters Susanne Craig and Russ Buettner.

Defendants now listed include The New York Times Company, reporters Craig, Buettner, Peter Baker, and Penguin Random House, while reporter Michael S. Schmidt, previously named, has been excluded this time.

Defamation allegations center on reporting

At the heart of Trump’s grievance are claims of defamation tied to the Times’ coverage of his Apprentice era and accusations of dubious tax maneuvers.

Trump’s camp isn’t mincing words, with a spokesperson stating, "President Trump is continuing to hold the Fake News responsible through this powerhouse lawsuit against the New York Times, its reporters, and Penguin Random House." If the media thought they could craft unchecked narratives, they might need a reality check.

The New York Times, however, stands firm, with a spokesperson retorting, "This lawsuit has no merit... The New York Times will not be deterred by intimidation tactics." Bold words, but when billions are on the line over reputation, a touch of restraint might serve better than bravado.

Trump’s wider war on media bias

This lawsuit is just one front in Trump’s ongoing battle with the press, as he’s taken on giants like ABC News, CBS News, and the Wall Street Journal for what he sees as slanted coverage.

Recent victories bolster his resolve -- last year, ABC settled a defamation claim with a $15 million charitable contribution for a future presidential museum or foundation, plus $1 million in legal fees, after an anchor’s misstatement on a legal ruling about Trump.

Similarly, CBS’s parent company, Paramount, settled for a sum potentially hitting $30 million ahead of a major merger, following Trump’s accusation of deceptive editing in a 60 Minutes segment featuring Vice President Kamala Harris.

Press freedom versus real accountability

These settlements signal Trump isn’t just swinging wildly -- he’s landing blows, pushing media titans to face consequences for what he deems irresponsible journalism.

Still, the tension persists: where does press freedom end and accountability begin? While some view Trump’s legal actions as a chill on reporting, others argue that powerful outlets must answer for narratives that can inflict real damage.

In a world where truth often gets buried under agendas, Trump’s persistence in these lawsuits might just force an overdue reckoning for media overreach, even if it’s a messy fight to watch.
