Trump responds to Mike Pence’s post-indictment quip, making it clear that their friendship is over

 August 3, 2023

Former President Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence have publicly fallen out over comments made following Trump's indictment.

In a recent development, Trump publicly criticized Pence, escalating their rift. This comes after Pence made comments regarding Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, as The Hill reported.

Trump's response to Pence's comments

Trump responded to Pence's remarks through a series of posts on Truth Social.

These posts were made around the same time Pence was addressing reporters at the Indiana State Fair and appearing on Fox News.

The former vice president was discussing the indictment against Trump over his efforts to stay in power after the 2020 election.

In his posts, Trump criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is currently second to the former president in most GOP primary polls. He then took a swipe at Pence, who is also running for the nomination.

Trump's criticism of Pence and DeSantis

Trump wrote:

Like Mike Pence, who I took from a flawed and failing gubernatorial re-elect campaign in the Great State of Indiana to make my V.P., Ron is a very disloyal guy who has taken bad advice!

This was followed by another post where Trump expressed sympathy for Pence, who he claimed was failing to attract crowds or enthusiasm.

The former president said:

I feel badly for Mike Pence, who is attracting no crowds, enthusiasm, or loyalty from people who, as a member of the Trump Administration, should be loving him.

Trump's claims about the 2020 election

Trump, who is leading the race for the 2024 Republican nomination, reiterated his claim that Pence had the power to intervene in the 2020 election results. This is a claim that Pence and legal scholars have repeatedly refuted.

On Tuesday, a grand jury indicted Trump on four counts, including conspiracy to defraud the United States.

Prosecutors allege that Trump knowingly propagated false claims that the 2020 election was fraudulent and that he had actually won.

Details of the indictment against Trump

The indictment details how Trump and his co-conspirators promoted the idea that Pence could unilaterally reject or return electoral votes during the Jan. 6 certification.

Pence has stated that he did not have the authority to do so.

The former VP, who is polling in the single digits in GOP primary polls, argued when he launched his campaign in June that Trump’s actions on Jan. 6 were disqualifying.

He stated that Trump put himself above the Constitution.

Pence's stance on the 2020 election

Pence said on Wednesday at the Indiana State Fair:

For my part, I want people to know that I had no right to overturn the election and that what the president maintained that day, and frankly has said over and over again over the last two-and-a-half years, is completely false.

He further added:

You know, I’m a student of American history. And the first time I heard in early December somebody suggest that as vice president I might be able to decide which votes to reject and which to accept, I knew that it was false. … I dismissed it out of hand. Sadly, the president was surrounded by a group of crackpot lawyers that kept telling him what his itching ears wanted to hear.
