Trump revokes Biden’s security clearance, ending his intel briefings
President Donald Trump announced Friday that he is revoking former President Joe Biden’s security clearance and putting an end to his daily intelligence briefings.
Trump justified the revocation decision by referencing Biden’s previous elimination of his own intelligence briefings in 2021 and the findings of a special counsel report on Biden’s handling of classified documents, as Newsmax reports.
Trump Announces Decision on Social Media
The announcement came shortly after Trump arrived at Mar-a-Lago for the weekend. He made the declaration on social media, explaining his reasoning and citing actions taken by Biden during his presidency.
In his statement, Trump referenced Biden’s 2021 directive to the Intelligence Community to cut off Trump’s access to classified briefings after leaving office. Trump stated that his decision was in line with the precedent set by Biden.
“There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information,” Trump said. “Therefore, we are immediately revoking Joe Biden’s Security Clearances and stopping his daily Intelligence Briefings.”
Biden Previously Blocked Trump’s Briefings
Trump’s decision follows a move made by Biden during the early months of his presidency. In 2021, Biden revoked Trump’s access to intelligence briefings, a courtesy typically extended to former presidents.
At the time, Biden cited concerns over Trump’s behavior, describing it as “erratic.” Officials raised questions about whether Trump could be trusted with sensitive intelligence following the events of Jan. 6, 2021, when the U.S. Capitol was stormed by demonstrators.
Trump pointed to this previous action as justification for his own decision to revoke Biden’s clearance. He claimed that Biden had established the standard for withholding intelligence from former presidents.
Hur Report and Its Influence
Trump also cited findings from the special counsel report led by Robert Hur. The report, released the previous year, examined Biden’s handling of classified documents and raised concerns about his memory.
According to the report, Biden exhibited signs of memory decline, leading to questions about his ability to manage sensitive information. Trump referenced these concerns in his statement, arguing that Biden should not have access to intelligence.
“The Hur Report revealed that Biden suffers from ‘poor memory’ and, even in his ‘prime,’ could not be trusted with sensitive information,” Trump stated.
Immediate Implications of Trump’s Move
Biden did not immediately respond to Trump’s decision. The White House has not issued an official statement regarding the announcement.
Trump, however, emphasized that the move was made in the interest of national security. He concluded his statement with a strong message directed at Biden.
“I will always protect our National Security -- JOE, YOU’RE FIRED. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump wrote.
A Shift in Presidential Traditions
Historically, former presidents have continued receiving intelligence briefings as a matter of tradition. These briefings allow former leaders to stay informed on national security matters in case their expertise is needed.
However, Biden’s decision in 2021 marked a rare break from that tradition. Now, Trump’s move signals a continuation of the political divide between the two leaders.
It remains unclear whether Biden or his administration will take any steps in response to the revocation.
Looking Ahead: National Security and Political Ramifications
The decision to revoke Biden’s clearance is likely to add to the ongoing tensions between the two political figures. With the 2024 presidential election looming, national security policies may become a key topic of debate.
Trump’s supporters have applauded the move as a necessary measure to protect classified information. Critics, however, may view it as a politically motivated decision.
As the situation develops, further responses from the Biden administration and intelligence officials may provide additional clarity on the impact of Trump’s directive.
