Trump Safe After Second Assassination Attempt at Florida Golf Club

 September 17, 2024

Former President Donald Trump escaped harm after shots were fired near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Secret Service quickly responded, apprehending a man armed with an AK-47 at the scene. This incident marks the second attempt on Trump's life, now under investigation by the FBI.

Trump was playing golf when the shots rang out, and his safety was confirmed by campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung, Fox News reported.

Agents opened fire on the suspect while the former president was on the fifth hole of his private course. Law enforcement soon detained the man, who reportedly carried an AK-47. Although no one sustained injuries during the incident, the FBI has classified it as an attempted assassination.

Secret Service Responds as Shots Fired

As details emerged, Cheung reassured the public about Trump's safety. "President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time," he said. The immediate response of the Secret Service likely prevented further escalation. Donald Trump Jr. also took to social media, sharing his reaction, stating, "An AK-47 was discovered in the bushes, per local law enforcement."

Members of the U.S. Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump, co-chaired by Representatives Mike Kelly and Jason Crow, announced they are closely monitoring the situation. They are coordinating with the Secret Service to ensure the investigation proceeds effectively and thoroughly.

Political Leaders React to Assassination Attempt

In the wake of the attempt, political leaders from both sides of the aisle issued statements condemning the violence. President Joe Biden, upon learning of the attack, expressed his relief at Trump’s safety. "I commend the work of the Secret Service and their law enforcement partners for their vigilance," he said. The president added, "As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country."

Vice President Kamala Harris and the rest of the White House staff were also briefed on the situation shortly after it occurred.

Congress Members Condemn Violence

Lawmakers from both parties were quick to voice their concerns. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham spoke directly with Trump after the event, later stating, "He’s in good spirits and more resolved than ever to save our country." House Speaker Mike Johnson highlighted Trump’s resilience, noting, "No leader in American history has endured more attacks and remained so strong and resilient."

Democrats also condemned the attempt. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said, "I applaud the Secret Service for their quick response to ensure former President Trump’s safety." Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries emphasized that "political violence has no place in a democratic society." His remarks echoed the sentiments of others who warned against escalating tensions in the political environment.

Task Force Stresses Concerns About Political Violence

The Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump reiterated its concerns about the broader implications of political violence in America. In a joint statement, the task force shared, "We are thankful that the former President was not harmed, but remain deeply concerned about political violence." The task force's work in collaboration with the Secret Service will continue to monitor any threats that may arise in the aftermath of the incident.

Republicans like Representative Elise Stefanik and Senator Rick Scott also voiced their concerns, emphasizing gratitude for Trump's safety. "I am grateful to hear that President Trump is safe following today’s reported assassination attempt in Florida," Stefanik said, while Scott remarked, "I thank God President Trump is safe."

Concerns About Political Rhetoric Raised

Some lawmakers raised the issue of heated political rhetoric potentially fueling these violent acts. Representative Anna Paulina, reflecting on the latest incident, said, "This irresponsible rhetoric is causing people to get hurt." Her comments mirrored growing concerns in Washington that inflammatory language and political divides may be contributing to the rise in threats and violence.

In response, New York Attorney General Letitia James called for a lowering of the temperature in political discourse. "Political violence, in any form, cannot be accepted or normalized in this country," James stated.

Investigation Continues as Trump Campaign Moves Forward

As the investigation into the assassination attempt continues, the FBI and other agencies will be working to determine the motivations behind the attack. Authorities have not yet released additional details about the suspect or any possible connections to extremist groups.

Despite the incident, Trump’s campaign has indicated that he will continue with his scheduled appearances. His resolve, according to those close to him, remains unchanged.

Both major political parties express a unified message that they cannot tolerate political violence and emphasize the need for vigilance to protect national leaders from future threats.
