Trump sends troops to guard Portland ICE facilities
In a decisive step to address rising unrest, President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of federal troops to protect Portland, Oregon, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities targeted by groups identified as Antifa, as Breitbart reports.
This move comes in the wake of violent events, including a high-profile assassination and a major riot in Portland, necessitating, the president says, urgent federal measures to maintain order.
The sequence of events leading to this action started over the summer with a severe anti-ICE riot in Portland, during which a federal building was besieged by protesters.
Violent clashes disrupt Portland
At an executive order signing event on Thursday, Vice President JD Vance highlighted the summer incident.
He noted that masked individuals effectively halted government functions at the site.
The VP described the attackers as a coordinated group, labeling them "paid operatives" engaged in politically motivated violence on U.S. soil.
Vance stressed the need for a government that prioritizes citizen safety over the interests of those perpetrating such disruptive acts.
Tragic killing intensifies national concern
On Sept. 10, the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk stunned the country, drawing greater attention to extremist activities.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox reported that shell casings at the crime scene carried anti-fascist messages.
They reportedly included phrases such as the anti-fascist lyric, "O Bella ciao" and a provocative note aimed at fascists.
The suspect, Tyler Robinson, was connected to these items, amplifying demands for tougher action against domestic threats.
Official designation for Antifa emerges
Responding to the murder, Trump issued an executive order on Monday classifying Antifa as a terrorist organization.
This policy shift signals the administration's intent to treat the group as a significant risk to public safety and national stability.
Trump's order reflects a broader strategy to suppress what he views as dangerous elements causing chaos in American cities.
Military support ordered
On Saturday morning, via a Truth Social post, Trump announced the deployment of troops to secure Portland and ICE facilities at the request of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
He instructed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to provide the required forces.
The president affirmed his willingness to apply "full force" if the situation demands it.
Trump also branded the culprits as "professional agitators" and "anarchists," vowing a strong federal presence to reestablish calm in Portland.
