Trump slams Smith, Biden over revelations of probe into Charlie Kirk's Turning Point USA

 September 18, 2025

In a fiery social media outburst, President Donald Trump unleashed sharp criticism against former special counsel Jack Smith and the Biden administration on Wednesday for what has been revealed as their past investigation into Turning Point USA, a conservative organization co-founded by Charlie Kirk in 2012.

This controversy centers on Trump's claims of political targeting through a probe dubbed "Arctic Frost," which scrutinized Republican-led groups, including Turning Point USA, for their ties to Trump's assertions of a rigged 2020 election, as The Hill reports.

The saga began when Smith, under the Biden administration, initiated an election interference investigation targeting 92 GOP organizations and individuals linked to Trump's claims about the 2020 election.

Political tensions rise over probe

Trump took to Truth Social on Wednesday to express his outrage, questioning why Turning Point USA was singled out for scrutiny by what he called a "deranged" Jack Smith and a "corrupt" Biden administration.

He accused the Justice Department of being "weaponized" against political adversaries, including himself, in an effort to undermine their influence.

"They tried to force Charlie, and many other people and movements, out of business," Trump wrote on the platform.

Grassley's revelations add fuel to fire

On Tuesday, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, escalated the issue by releasing audio and records related to the "Arctic Frost" investigation.

Grassley highlighted that numerous FBI agents had been removed since Trump's administration took power, alleging that some had turned into partisan operatives.

"The removals included agents and prosecutors who became partisan weapons that lost their way, and I’ve made records public to prove it," Grassley stated.

Smith defends independence

Smith, who resigned earlier this year before Trump's inauguration, has staunchly defended his actions during the investigation into Trump's conduct in the prior election cycle.

In a January letter to former Attorney General Merrick Garland, Smith asserted that the decision to pursue charges against Trump was solely his own.

"The ultimate decision to bring charges against Mr. Trump was mine. It is a decision I stand behind fully," Smith wrote in the letter.

Trump allies question Smith's motives

Smith also addressed Trump's accusations of political influence, dismissing them as baseless and absurd in the same correspondence.

"To all who know me well, the claim from Mr. Trump that my decisions as a prosecutor were influenced or directed by the Biden administration or other political actors is, in a word, laughable," he noted.

Meanwhile, allies of Trump have accused Smith of orchestrating charges to sabotage Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, though many legal cases against Trump were dismissed following his election victory and a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity.

Legal, ethical debates persist

Smith has argued that the Supreme Court's decision did not entirely clear Trump of accountability, maintaining that the Justice Department's stance prohibits prosecuting a sitting president regardless of the allegations' severity.

"The Department’s view that the Constitution prohibits Mr. Trump’s indictment and prosecution while he is in office is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution—all of which the Office stands fully behind," Smith emphasized in his letter.

Additionally, Senate Republicans initiated a watchdog investigation into Smith earlier this year over alleged Hatch Act violations, claims which Smith's legal team dismissed as unfounded and without merit.
