Trump Strategically Nominated Gaetz for AG to Sideline Him, Says Dana Loesch

 November 22, 2024

In one commentator's estimation, President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz as attorney general was a strategic gambit like no other.

Dana Loesch, a conservative radio host, interpreted Trump’s nomination as a savvy maneuver to remove Gaetz from a position of influence without causing an internal party uproar, as the Daily Caller reports.

Loesch voiced on her radio show that Trump’s decision to nominate Gaetz, despite knowing he might not get confirmed, was aimed at getting Gaetz “out of the way” without directly confronting him.

This move would allow the Senate’s confirmation process to address any issues indirectly.

The Context Behind Trump's Nomination

Loesch elaborated that Gaetz, who has had contentious relationships with other lawmakers, would struggle with the confirmation process, which could serve as an indirect method of sidelining him.

She described Trump’s tactics as “4D chess,” a complex strategy to maintain public loyalty while distancing from Gaetz.

This nomination came amid ethical investigations into Gaetz, involving allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use, although these were not central to Trump’s decision.

The House Ethics Committee, which was investigating these allegations, declared a day before the nomination that they could not release their report due to a lack of majority agreement.

Immediate Resignation Raises Questions

Simultaneous to his nomination, Gaetz announced he would resign from his House seat “effective immediately.”

That was a move that House Speaker Mike Johnson immediately confirmed.

Loesch criticized this decision, pointing out that resigning before confirmation was premature and a poor strategy that reduced the majority needed for a smooth Senate operation.

She argued that other nominees had not resigned from their positions during their confirmation processes.

That, she said, suggested that Gaetz’s immediate resignation was unnecessary and tactically unsound.

According to Loesch, this resignation might have further narrowed his future political options, including any potential Senate campaigns, especially given his known disagreements with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Speculations on Future Political Dynamics

Loesch speculated that the strained relationship between Gaetz and DeSantis would complicate any of the former lawmaker's future political endeavors.

This tension could affect Gaetz’s political capital and his ability to garner support within his party.

Despite these challenges, Gaetz affirmed his ongoing support for Trump in a post on X, indicating his continued loyalty despite the political maneuvers.

On her show, Loesch concluded that Trump’s move was a brilliant example of strategic positioning within political circles, intended to manage potential internal conflicts smoothly and efficiently without public opposition from Gaetz.
