Trump warns of Democrat-led plan to expand Supreme Court, add activist judges

 December 2, 2025

Hold onto your hats, folks -- President Donald Trump is sounding the alarm over what he sees as a dangerous Democrat-led scheme to overhaul the Supreme Court.

Trump has unleashed a fiery critique of Obama-era Attorney General Eric Holder’s recent comments on court reform, accusing Democrats of plotting to stack the bench with as many as 21 “radical left activist judges” while urging Senate Republicans to ditch the filibuster to stop this agenda in its tracks, as the Daily Mail reports.

Let’s rewind to early November when Holder sat down for an interview with the liberal YouTube channel MeidasTouch, where he didn’t hold back on his view of the nation’s highest court.

Holder Calls Supreme Court 'Broken'

Holder described the Supreme Court as a “broken institution” that needs to be a central topic in national discussions leading up to 2028, suggesting that if Democrats control Congress and the White House, reform must be on the table.

“I think the Supreme Court is a broken institution and it has to be, I think, a part of the national conversation in '26 and '28,” Holder stated, as reported by MeidasTouch. What’s broken, one might ask, when the court is simply interpreting the Constitution as written, not as progressives might wish?

Holder went further, advocating for “substantive reforms” like expanding the number of justices and imposing term limits, though he notably avoided pinning down any specific figure for the court’s size.

Trump Fires Back on Truth Social

Fast forward to Monday night, when Trump took to Truth Social with a blistering response, labeling Holder an “Obama sycophant” and dragging up the old “Fast and Furious” scandal from Holder’s tenure as a jab at his credibility.

“Obama sycophant, the former Attorney General of the United States, who did so much to hurt our Country… just gave a Speech where he emphatically stated, above all else, that Democrats will PACK the Supreme Court of the United States if they get the chance,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. If that doesn’t sound like a call to arms for conservatives, what does?

Trump didn’t stop there -- he claimed Democrats are eyeing a jump from their earlier rumored target of 15 justices to a whopping 21, a number Holder never mentioned, warning that such a move would “destroy our Constitution.”

Filibuster Fight Takes Center Stage

Beyond the court-packing fears, Trump zeroed in on a legislative roadblock: the Senate filibuster, which currently demands 60 votes to pass most bills, often stalling Republican priorities.

He’s been hammering this point for weeks, posting repeatedly in November on Truth Social to demand Republicans eliminate the filibuster via the so-called “nuclear option” of simple-majority voting to clear the path for conservative policies.

Trump argues that without this change, Republicans risk losing ground in future midterms and the 2028 presidential race, not to mention failing to block what he sees as a disastrous Democratic agenda.

Policy Dreams and Dire Warnings

Ever the optimist for Republican wins, Trump painted a rosy picture of what could happen if the filibuster falls -- think stronger voter ID laws and codified restrictions on transgender participation in sports, policies long championed by conservatives.

Yet, he cautioned that inaction could lead to irreversible shifts in the political landscape, including Democratic plans to grant statehood to Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., potentially securing more liberal seats in Congress.

While Holder critiques multiple branches of government as failing the American people, Trump’s push to reshape legislative power through filibuster reform presents itself as a historic opportunity -- or a dire necessity, depending on where you stand on the political spectrum.
