Tulsi Gabbard Open to Joining Trump Administration

 September 19, 2024

Former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, a military veteran with two tours in the Middle East, has expressed her willingness to serve in a potential Trump administration, particularly in areas related to foreign policy and national security. She made her comments during a conversation with Fox News Digital, highlighting her criticisms of the current Democratic leadership’s approach to diplomacy and the war in Ukraine.

Gabbard, who has distanced herself from the Democratic Party, supports Trump’s foreign policy goals and is critical of Vice President Kamala Harris’ handling of the Ukraine conflict, Fox News reported.

Gabbard emphasized her desire to make an impact in national security and foreign policy, citing her experiences both as a member of Congress and as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. She noted that her top priorities include reducing the influence of the military-industrial complex, preventing the escalation of global conflicts, and avoiding the potential for nuclear war.

Gabbard Cites National Security Concerns

In her interview, Gabbard expressed strong opposition to what she sees as the Democratic Party’s current stance on diplomacy, particularly with regard to the ongoing war in Ukraine. She pointed to President Trump’s foreign policy approach as a model for de-escalation, contrasting it with the policies of Vice President Harris and President Biden.

“President Trump did in his last administration what President Obama refused to do, what President Biden refused to do, what Kamala Harris has made clear she refuses to do – which is to go out and do that tough work that a president and commander in chief has to do in diplomacy,” Gabbard said.

Gabbard further elaborated on her concerns, accusing the Democratic leadership of being dismissive of the risks of nuclear war, particularly in the context of the Ukraine crisis. She criticized Harris for escalating the conflict, warning that continued escalation could lead to catastrophic global consequences.

Gabbard Aligns with Trump’s Foreign Policy

At a campaign fundraiser event in Atlanta, Georgia, Gabbard made it clear that she supported Trump’s foreign policy goals, especially his desire to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. Gabbard’s alignment with Trump marks a significant shift from her earlier political career, where she served as the vice chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2013 to 2016 and supported candidates like Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden.

However, in recent years, Gabbard has distanced herself from the Democratic Party. She highlighted her frustration with what she perceives as the party’s departure from its earlier values, including civil liberties and peace.

Gabbard Criticizes Democrats' Approach to Diplomacy

Gabbard’s criticism of Harris and other Democratic leaders centers on what she sees as a lack of willingness to engage in diplomacy with U.S. adversaries. She argued that diplomacy is necessary for maintaining peace and preventing the escalation of conflicts, particularly those involving nuclear-armed nations.

“The longer this war goes on and the more that Kamala Harris and Joe Biden and the neocons of Washington continue to escalate this war, the greater risk we are of a potential nuclear war, World War III,” Gabbard warned.

According to Gabbard, the Biden administration’s approach to Ukraine is not only reckless but also disconnected from the realities of the risks involved. She stressed the importance of diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts, rather than relying on military escalation.

Gabbard on Leaving the Democratic Party

In her remarks, Gabbard also touched on her decision to leave the Democratic Party, noting that she has met many former Democrats who share her concerns. She described her growing frustration with the party’s direction and its leadership, stating that it no longer represents the values it once did.

“There are a lot of people who I meet in a lot of different places every day who are former Democrats, or people who are leaving the Democratic Party,” she said. “People who recognize the same things that I have and experienced the same things that I have and realize that the Democratic Party of today doesn't stand for them doesn't stand for freedom, it doesn't stand for civil liberties… doesn't stand for peace.”

Gabbard’s Military Background and Potential Role

Gabbard’s military service and foreign policy experience have positioned her as a potential candidate for a significant role in a future Trump administration. As a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, she has firsthand experience in dealing with issues related to national security and foreign affairs.

Gabbard’s willingness to work in a potential Trump administration signals her continued shift toward conservative foreign policy positions. While she was once a rising star in the Democratic Party, her recent alignment with Trump’s foreign policy goals has placed her at odds with many of her former colleagues.

Gabbard's Future in Politics

While it remains to be seen what role Gabbard might play in a future Trump administration, her comments indicate a strong desire to continue her work in national security and foreign policy. Gabbard’s alignment with Trump on key issues, such as ending the war in Ukraine and reducing the influence of the military-industrial complex, suggests that she could play a significant role in shaping future U.S. foreign policy if Trump were to win the presidency in 2024.

For now, Gabbard’s criticisms of Harris and the current Democratic leadership signal her increasing distance from the party she once represented. As the 2024 election approaches, Gabbard’s position on foreign policy and national security will likely continue to be a point of discussion, both among her supporters and her critics.
