Would-Be Passengers Survive After Luckily Missing Ill-Fated Flight in Brazil

 August 11, 2024

Two passengers narrowly avoided disaster on Friday when they missed a VoePass flight that later crashed in Brazil, killing all 62 people on board.

A mix-up with the duo's booking led the passengers, including Adriano Assis, to believe they were flying with a different airline, a mishap that ultimately saved their lives, as Fox News reports.

The tragic accident occurred when the VoePass ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop, operating as Flight 2283, spiraled out of control and crashed into a residential area in Vinhedo, a city of 77,000 people. The crash claimed the lives of 57 passengers and four crew members.

Passengers Avoid Tragedy Due to Airline Confusion

Assis, one of the passengers, was supposed to be on that fateful flight. He arrived at the airport in Cascavel around 9:40 a.m., thinking he was flying with LATAM Airlines.

His flight, however, was actually booked with VoePass. By the time he realized the mistake and reached the correct counter, it was too late to board.

"The microphone didn’t say anything, the boards didn’t say anything about the flight either," Assis said, reflecting on the confusion. Despite his efforts to board, the VoePass agent informed him that it was too late, as it was already an hour before boarding time. "The guy said I wouldn't be boarding anymore," Assis added.

Another passenger, Jose Felipe, was also part of the group that missed the flight. Like Assis, Felipe believed he was flying with LATAM. "I thought I was going to leave on LATAM which was closed," Felipe stated. He waited at the airport, only to be told by an airline worker that it was too late to board. Instead, he was offered a ticket reschedule.

Plane Plummets in Residential Area, No Survivors

Flight 2283 met its tragic end as it descended rapidly and crashed into Vinhedo, leaving the city in shock. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the plane spiraling downward before it crashed, with footage showing the aftermath -- a crash site engulfed in smoke and fire.

Emergency responders, including firefighters, military police, and civil defense teams, rushed to the scene. The intensity of the crash left no survivors, and the community mourned the loss of 62 lives.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva acknowledged the tragedy during an event in southern Brazil, requesting a minute of silence to honor the victims.

Meanwhile, VoePass staff at Guarulhos airport worked to notify and support victims' families, providing them with a private room for comfort.

Aviation Expert Suggests Possible Causes

In the wake of the crash, aviation expert Arthur Rosenberg weighed in on what might have gone wrong. Rosenberg suggested that the plane may have stalled midair due to an issue with one or both engines. "A stall is when the plane is not moving through the air fast enough, forward motion, to be able to maintain lift to stay in the air," he explained.

Radar data supported this theory, indicating a "rapid descent," potentially due to engine failure or another malfunction. "The sound tells me there was something wrong with one or both engines," Rosenberg added. The ATR 72-500 aircraft involved in the crash is typically used for shorter flights, raising questions about the specific circumstances that led to the tragedy.

Investigation Underway as Black Box Recovered

As the investigation into the crash continues, the plane's manufacturer, ATR, has confirmed that its specialists are fully engaged in supporting the probe. The recovery of the plane's black box, or flight data recorder, by officials will be crucial in determining the exact cause of the crash.

For the survivors, the mix-up with their flight booking turned out to be a life-saving stroke of luck. Assis, reflecting on his narrow escape, said, "I argued with him and stuff, and that was it, and he saved my life, man."

Felipe shared similar sentiments, expressing relief that he and Assis were not on board the doomed flight. "Thank God, we didn’t get on that plane," he said, acknowledging the fortunate mistake that kept them from boarding.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the tragic crash of VoePass Flight 2283 resulted in the loss of 62 lives, leaving Brazil in mourning. However, a booking mix-up prevented two passengers from boarding, sparing them from the disaster.

As investigations continue, the aviation community and the families of the victims seek answers to what caused the fatal accident.
