US Strikes ISIS in Syria Following Assad's Ouster

 December 10, 2024

The United States is said to have conducted "dozens of precision airstrikes" in Syria this Sunday amid ongoing upheaval.

The Biden-authorized operation targeted ISIS camps in an effort to thwart their reorganization following Bashar al-Assad's ouster, as the Daily Mail reports, a move of which the incoming administration may not approve.

The airstrikes occurred across Central Syria, targeting known ISIS camps and operatives. Using B-52, F-15, and A-10 warplanes, the US military struck 75 different targets.

This military action was a response to the chaotic situation in Syria, with ISIS potentially using the turmoil to regain strength.

Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla stated that these strikes are a clear message to any entity in Syria aiding ISIS. “There should be no doubt - we will not allow ISIS to reconstitute and take advantage of the current situation in Syria.

All organizations in Syria should know that we will hold them accountable if they partner with or support ISIS in any way,” he explained.

Rebels Seize Damascus in Historic Uprising

Concurrent with the U.S. airstrikes, Syrian rebels achieved a significant victory by taking control of Damascus, the Syrian capital, previously under Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Assad was forced to flee the country, finding asylum in Russia.

Rebels first took control of Aleppo and subsequently stormed Damascus, declaring the country liberated from Assad's rule.

Assad and his family left Syria early Sunday, boarding a Russian plane from Latakia to Moscow, confirmed by Russia's deputy defense minister, Alexander Fomin.

In Damascus, locals celebrated with public prayers and anti-Assad slogans, marking a dramatic shift in the nation's leadership landscape.

US Military Works to Prevent ISIS Resurgence

The strategic military strikes by the U.S. were specifically designed to prevent ISIS from exploiting the power vacuum in Syria.

“We will not allow ISIS to reconstitute and will hold accountable any organizations in Syria supporting ISIS,” reiterated Kurilla during a Pentagon briefing.

The use of heavy military firepower, including the deployment of B-52s, F-15s, and A-10s, underscores the US commitment to destabilizing ISIS capabilities in the region.

This aggressive stance comes despite President-elect Donald Trump's words of caution against U.S. involvement in Syria.

“Syria is a mess but is not our friend, and the United States should have nothing to do with it. This is not our fight. Let it play out. Do not get involved!” Trump had stated.

Syrian Civil War Takes New Turn

The fall of Assad marks a pivotal moment in the Syrian civil war, which has seen over 507,000 deaths, including 164,000 civilians. The recent events signal a possible end to one of the most brutal conflicts of the 21st century.

Syrian rebel commander Hassan Abdul Ghany announced the liberation of Homs, emphasizing that the rebellion has now reached a critical juncture. The withdrawal of the Syrian army from key locations has left a significant power vacuum.

With Assad seeking refuge in Russia and his precise whereabouts undisclosed by Russian authorities, the future of Syria now hangs in the balance.
