Verdict in Carroll's Case Against Trump Affirmed by Appeals Court
In a significant legal decision this week, the U.S. Court of Appeals validated a ruling that held President-elect Donald Trump accountable for sexual abuse allegations and defamation against columnist E. Jean Carroll.
A sequence of incidents, purported to have taken place over two decades ago, climaxed in an appellate court's decision resulting in a $5 million fine for Trump, The Hill reported.
The jury's verdict, asserting Trump's liability, was upheld by a panel of three judges belonging to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on Monday.
Timeline of Events Leading up to The Ruling
An alleged incident in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s initially sparked the roots of the case. Subsequently, during Trump’s first presidency, these allegations resurfaced, and a court ultimately found him liable for defaming Carroll.
On Monday, the court ordered Trump to pay $5 million to Carroll. Nevertheless, despite this ruling, Trump's legal team suggested they might request a review by the full appeals court or even escalate the case to the Supreme Court.
Trails of Legal Battles Confronting Trump
As the court decided on the aforementioned verdict, Trump appealed an $83.3 million penalty for repeatedly denying Carroll's allegations.
Earlier this month, Trump secured a $15 million settlement from ABC News and anchor George Stephanopoulos over a misrepresented verdict.
Trump challenged the verdict, accusing the court of allowing improper testimony and violating his rights by preventing him from cross-examining Carroll.
Panel Rejects Trump's Assertions
The panel, in its ruling, refuted the claims made by Trump. Furthermore, the panel deemed the evidentiary elements, which included testimonies from two other women who also accused Trump of sexual misconduct and the controversial "Access Hollywood" tape, as legally admissible.
Additionally, the panel's statement affirmed, “On review for abuse of discretion, we conclude that Mr. Trump has not demonstrated that the district court erred in any of the challenged rulings.”
Expressing her contentment with the ruling, Carroll's attorney Robbie Kaplan also extended her gratitude towards the Second Circuit for their careful consideration of the arguments.
Trump's Legal Team Eyes the Future Course of Action
Despite the decision, Trump's spokesperson Steven Cheung, expressed his disappointment, stating the American people have re-elected President Trump with an overwhelming mandate, demanding an immediate end to what he called the politicization of the justice system.
He further encouraged unity by saying, "We look forward to uniting our country in the new administration as President Trump makes America great again."
As this legal scenario continues to unfold, the nation will be watching closely for the subsequent actions of President Trump and his legal team.
The country will continue to await the unfolding of the legal saga involving President-elect Trump and E. Jean Carroll.
