Harris Evades Recession Plan Questions, Criticizes Trump’s Economic Record

 August 9, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign turned its focus on former President Donald Trump’s economic record as worries about a potential recession in the U.S. economy grow.

In light of economists’ forecasts of a possible recession, Harris' spokesperson made several statements attacking Trump’s economic policies and defending the achievements of the current White House, though the candidate herself has avoided offering specifics about her approach, as Fox News reports.

Harris Campaign Deflects Recession Concerns

When asked about her strategy to handle a possible recession, Harris’ campaign shifted the spotlight onto Trump’s economic record.

Ammar Moussa, a spokesperson for the Harris campaign, criticized Trump’s tenure, arguing that his economic policies negatively impacted middle-class families.

Goldman Sachs' latest analysis suggested that the probability of a U.S. recession has increased, moving from 15% to 25%. These economic concerns were further aggravated after global markets plunged overnight on Monday, followed by a drop in U.S. stocks the same morning.

The market's decline came on the heels of a weaker-than-anticipated jobs report for July, which triggered the "Sahm Rule," a recession indicator. Harris' campaign blamed the previous administration for the disappointing jobs figures, arguing that Trump’s policies led to this outcome.

Spokespersons' Criticisms and Harris' Stance

Moussa, the Harris campaign spokesperson, remarked, “What middle-class families need is steady economic stewardship, not chaotic ranting lies.”

He further criticized Trump by stating, “Donald Trump had the worst jobs record of any modern president and oversaw some of the worst days in the stock market in history while spending his presidency lining the pockets of his wealthy friends who shipped American jobs overseas.”

James Singer, another spokesperson for Harris’ campaign, echoed similar sentiments. “Donald Trump failed Americans as president, costing our economy millions of jobs, and bringing us to the brink of recession,” Singer claimed. He added that Trump’s future plans would “decimate the middle class" and "increase taxes on working families.”

Democratic critics revisited Harris' past remarks on economic matters, particularly after President Biden exited the presidential race last month. A passage from the book This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America's Future, highlights a 2021 incident in which President Biden dismissed Harris’ comments about funding for "human infrastructure."

Economic Agenda and Administration's Achievements

Harris has been vocal in her economic agenda, advocating for affordable health care, childcare, and policies to strengthen the middle class. Harris asserts, "Building up the middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency. Because we here know when our middle class is strong, America is strong."

The Biden-Harris administration prides itself on several economic accomplishments. Harris' campaign underscores the claim that the administration has created nearly 16 million new jobs and has invested over $1 trillion in infrastructure projects.

Furthermore, in tackling inflation, Harris discussed domestic policies addressing supply chain issues back in 2021. "So, we have addressed it in a number of ways... one of the approaches we have taken is to work with labor unions and to work with municipalities in opening back up and extending the hours of our ports," Harris elaborated.

Trump Responds to Administration’s Criticisms

Former President Trump did not hold back in his criticisms of the current administration’s economic policies. He vowed to rectify the economy and took to social media to voice his opinions about the ongoing economic issues.

Trump expressed his discontent stating, "Of course there is a massive market downturn. Kamala is even worse than Crooked Joe... Markets will NEVER accept the Radical Left Lunatic that DESTROYED San Francisco and California..."

In another post, Trump exclaimed, "STOCK MARKETS CRASHING. I TOLD YOU SO!!! KAMALA DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE. BIDEN IS SOUND ASLEEP. ALL CAUSED BY INEPT U.S. LEADERSHIP!"

Conclusion

As the U.S. economy faces potential recession, Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign has turned its focus against former President Donald Trump’s economic record.

With key economic indicators reflecting growing concerns and political figures trading barbs, it remains to be seen how this economic discourse will evolve in the coming months.
