Vice President Kamala Harris Emerges as Top Contender to Replace Biden, Even Among some WH Staffers

 July 4, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris is emerging as the chief alternative to President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 election, according to new sources within the Biden campaign, the White House, and the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

This information from inside the White House comes amid growing frustration within the Biden campaign due to multiple damaging leaks and concerns about Biden’s political viability, as Breitbart reports.

Seven senior sources have disclosed to Reuters that Harris is being considered as the top alternative to lead the Democrat ticket should Biden step down. The Biden campaign is under considerable stress after a poor debate performance, which has sparked calls for Biden to drop out of the race.

Harris is Viewed as the Top Choice

This latest leak marks the fourth instance of damaging information released against Biden in two days.

Previous leaks included details about Biden’s nap schedule during debate preparation and fears among staffers to communicate with Biden because of his outbursts of anger.

Additionally, there were concerns from former President Barack Obama regarding Biden’s political sustainability. The White House has denied the first two leaks as false.

Harris stands out as the prime candidate for several reasons. Firstly, the transfer of Biden’s donations can be more seamlessly accomplished if Harris takes his place. Secondly, Harris has a higher name recognition compared to other potential candidates. Lastly, a recent CNN poll indicated that Harris has the most favorable polling numbers against former President Donald Trump.

Challenges Await Harris

Despite being a strong contender, Harris faces several hurdles. Foremost among these challenges is her low approval rating, currently at 39%t. Furthermore, her performance as the border czar, tasked with managing the southern border crisis, has been notably criticized.

Political analysts point out that replacing Biden would involve overcoming significant hurdles: getting a new candidate on the ballot in all 50 states, reallocating campaign funds, and finding a nominee who, under the given circumstances, could avoid being seen as merely a placeholder.

Party Leaders Weigh In

Donna Brazile, a former interim chair of the DNC, emphasized the continuity of the Biden-Harris ticket.

“People may have dreams of another superhero, but there is a process, and the last time I checked, it’s a Biden-Harris ticket. She’s number two on the ticket,” she asserted.

Brazile reinforced that Biden remains the Democratic Party’s nominee and “is not going anywhere.”

Michael Trujillo, a former strategist for Hillary Clinton, also expressed support for Harris, highlighting the difficulty in surpassing a sitting vice president to secure the nomination.

He noted, “All of the delegates are not just Joe Biden delegates, they are Kamala Harris delegates. She will have a sizable delegation and support in all 50 states on day one.”

A Complicated Transition Process

If the necessity to replace Biden becomes a reality, the Democratic Party will face a complex and potentially chaotic transition process. Political experts emphasize that setting up a new candidate in all state ballots will be formidable. There are strict deadlines and complicated regulations which must be adhered to, ensuring every state recognizes the nominee.

Financing the campaign of a new candidate involves its complexities. Biden’s campaign funds would need to be strategically redirected to support Harris or any other chosen nominee. This transition must be executed seamlessly to prevent financial disruptions within the campaign.

Endorsements and Political Viability

Harris’s political viability is reinforced by endorsements from prominent Democrats who underscore her inherent strengths and potential benefits.

Her name recognition is significant, which provides an advantage in the campaign. Moreover, being an integral part of the Biden-Harris ticket since the previous election, Harris brings consistency and continuity to the campaign narrative.

Nevertheless, Harris’s tenure as vice president and her approval ratings remain areas of concern. Her handling of pivotal issues such as border security could be points of contention leveraged by political opponents to question her competence.
