Virginia GOP Primary in Deadlock as Vote Counting Continues

 June 20, 2024

The Republican primary race for Virginia's 5th Congressional District between House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good and state Sen. John McGuire, remained undecided this week, with McGuire appearing to lead by a slim margin.

The outcome in Virginia -- one closely watched by former President Donald Trump -- is awaited by millions as the remaining votes are set to be counted on Thursday due to delays stemming from Wednesday's Juneteenth holiday, as CBS News reports.

The Republican primary is taking place in Virginia's 5th Congressional District, over a seat held by Bob Good, who is also the House Freedom Caucus Chairman. Challenging him is state Sen. John McGuire, a former Navy SEAL.

The race is exceptionally close, with 96% of the votes already counted. As it stands ahead of Thursday's continued count, McGuire has secured 31,402 votes, narrowly leading over Good's 31,057 votes. This 0.4% margin equates to a mere 345 votes.

Wait For Results Due To Juneteenth

The anticipation for the final count is heightened because the remaining votes will be tallied on Thursday. This delay was necessitated by the observance of the Juneteenth holiday on Wednesday. Consequently, the final outcome of this tightly contested primary remains uncertain.

Political analysts have been closely watching this district, which the Cook Political Report rates as "Solid Republican" for the general election. This means that regardless of the Republican candidate who prevails in the primary, the district is expected to remain under GOP control.

Tensions In Trump-Good Relationship

Good has encountered significant challenges during his campaign, particularly concerning his relationship with Kevin McCarthy-aligned Republicans and former President Donald Trump. Initially, Good endorsed Ron DeSantis, who is running against Trump in the presidential primary. Although Good later switched his endorsement to Trump, it was deemed "too late" by Trump, as he expressed in a post on Truth Social.

According to Trump, "Bob Good is BAD FOR VIRGINIA, AND BAD FOR THE USA." He further remarked on Truth Social, "I just want to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, and the person that can most help me do that is Navy Seal and highly respected State Legislator, John McGuire, a true American Hero."

Trump's statement underscores his firm support for McGuire. During a televised rally for McGuire, Trump suggested that Good would betray Virginia if he were reelected, analogous to what Trump perceived as a previous betrayal against him.

Trump's Influence and Endorsements

McGuire has garnered strong endorsements from prominent Trump-aligned Republicans. These endorsements include former President Donald Trump himself, as well as Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Warren Davidson.

Trump-backed McGuire has described Good as a backstabber, with his campaign ads highlighting that "Trump doesn't need another backstabber in Congress. He needs John McGuire — a straight shooter who always has his six."

Despite the challenges, Bob Good has also received substantial endorsements. Notable figures supporting him include Reps. Matt Gaetz, Byron Donald, and Virginia Rep. Ben Cline. The race between these two candidates has seen competitive funding, with McGuire narrowly outraising Good, garnering $1.2 million compared to Good's $1.1 million.

Financial Backing and Outside Forces

Both candidates have also benefited from significant financial involvement from outside groups, highlighting the stakes and interest in this primary race. The financial support symbolizes the divided loyalties and strategic interests within the Republican Party.

This primary has also been marked by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's efforts to unseat Good, in what is his second attempt to unseat a lawmaker who voted to oust him. Previously, McCarthy's attempt to unseat Rep. Nancy Mace was unsuccessful.

The Virginia 5th Congressional District primary encapsulates broader themes of loyalty, betrayal, and high-stakes political maneuvering within the Republican Party. The tight margin and suspenseful wait for the final vote count have captured significant attention.

In conclusion, the Republican primary for Virginia's 5th Congressional District remains unresolved as votes continue to be counted.

With strong endorsements and substantial funding on both sides, the race between Bob Good and John McGuire is a clear reflection of the current dynamics and divisions within the GOP.

Only after the final votes are counted will the Republican candidate for the general election be determined, ensuring another layer of intrigue in this already contentious race.
