Virginia library director resigns after parents call for defunding over explicit books

 August 9, 2023

Amid a heated debate over explicit children's books, the director of a Virginia library has resigned.

In recent events, Michelle Ross, the director of Samuels Library in Front Royal, Virginia, has stepped down from her position. This decision came after a series of protests and demands from parents and community members regarding the presence of explicit content in books for young people, the Daily Wire reported.

Emergency meeting leads to resignation

Ross' resignation was announced during an emergency meeting held by the Samuels Public Library Board of Trustees.

The board accepted her immediate resignation. Melody Hotek, the Board of Trustees President, expressed the board's full support for Ross's decision. She emphasized their understanding of the decision's impact on Ross' well-being and health.

Eileen Grady, a seasoned member with 21 years of experience at the library, has been appointed as the interim director. The board aims to finalize a permanent director within the next six months.

Parents rally for book removal

Earlier this summer, a group named Clean Up Samuels, comprising concerned parents and other community members, initiated a petition. They demanded the removal of several books they deemed inappropriate, with many labeled as "pornographic."

The group's concerns escalated to the point where they called for a complete overhaul of the library staff and the board of trustees.

On June 6, a significant number of parents and community members attended a Warren County Board of Supervisors meeting.

They voiced their concerns about the controversial children's books. A considerable portion of the attendees, especially from the local Catholic community, expressed their disapproval of the content during the public comment segment. Talking about the books, one concerned dad said:

This is not literature. This is smut.

Another concerned parent emphasized the potential harm explicit content could cause to children. She highlighted the library's role as a supportive entity for families rather than an adversary.

County's response to the controversy

In response to the overwhelming public sentiment, the Warren County Board of Supervisors made a significant decision.

They chose to withhold 75% of the library's budget for the upcoming fiscal year. This decision will be revisited in September.

Delores Oates, a member of the county board, clarified that the budget wasn't cut. Instead, this move allows the library to present its proposed policies for approval. It also ensures accountability and aims to find a resolution to the ongoing issue.

Books under scrutiny

The list of books that Clean Up Samuels finds objectionable includes titles like It’s Perfectly Normal, This Book Is Gay, This Is Why They Hate Us, and several others.

The group's demands are clear: remove the explicit books from the children's section, sever ties with the American Library Association to ensure age-appropriate materials are acquired and replace the current library leadership accused of violating public trust.

Before her resignation, Ross informed The Daily Wire that 134 titles were under review. Some of these titles are from the list provided by Clean Up Samuels. Ross mentioned that the books could either be retained, relocated, or removed.

Library's measures to address concerns

In light of the controversy, the library has taken steps to address the concerns of the parents. They introduced new library cards, allowing parents to restrict the sections their children can access. Additionally, a "new adult" section has been created for readers aged 16 and above.

Front Royal, where the library is located, is home to Christendom College, a small Catholic liberal arts school.

Many of its graduates choose to stay and raise families in the area. The town also hosts the Seton Home Study School, a Catholic-accredited homeschool program with thousands of enrolled students.
