X suspends DeSantis PAC account just before GOP debate begins

 August 24, 2023

On Wednesday, social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, unexpectedly suspended Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' main supporting PAC account just hours before the Republican's presidential primary debate, as Fox News reported.

The account representing the Never Back Down PAC as @nvrbackdown24 was subjected to the interruption at a pivotal time, as reported by the PAC's strategic communications head, Matt Wolking.

Wolking theorized that accounts favoring Trump might have "engaged in mass reporting" against the DeSantis PAC account.

"X says it 'seems like our automated systems incorrectly picked it up as "spam."' We have asked X to tell us who exactly reported @NvrBackDown24 as spam," Wolking expressed via his own handle.

Evidence of Pro-Trump Account Celebrations

Wolking shared snapshots highlighting multiple X accounts with allegiances to former President Donald Trump, celebrating the suspension of the DeSantis PAC account.

He articulated, "Given their celebration, we have asked @X @elonmusk to disclose whether these Trump-backed accounts and their affiliated bot network have recently engaged in mass reporting against the @NvrBackDown24 account in order to manipulate X's rules."

The suspension came at a crucial juncture –- merely hours before the inaugural GOP 2024 presidential primary debate scheduled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

By late morning, though the account seemed active again, its follower metrics had plummeted to merely triple digits, a significant drop from its original count.

While several tagged posts flooded X, pointing at the suspension of the pro-DeSantis PAC, the platform's owner, Elon Musk, opted for silence.

Reactions Pour In Over Suspension

Christina Pushaw, who helms the rapid response department for DeSantis' campaign, didn't hold back on her speculation that pro-Trump factions might be behind this suspension.

She stated to her personal X account, "BEYOND PARODY The same trolls who cry nonstop when they're censored on social media... are cheering for their opponents to be censored on social media."

She emphasized that the tactic of avoiding debates and attempting to silence opponents is a familiar strategy among left-wing liberals.

She expressed disappointment at the possibility of Republicans themselves adopting such measures.

While acknowledging the restoration of its account, the Never Back Down PAC remains firm in its demand for a comprehensive clarification from both Musk and X regarding the underlying reasons for the suspension.

Never Back Down, in its X post addressing the matter, stated, “While our follower count has not yet been fully restored, we appear to be back. Follow Never Back Down to get the facts the Trump campaign doesn’t want you to see! We are hoping to receive more details about the cause of this suspension on debate day, @elonmusk. Please."

Never Back Down has amassed significant funds from a diverse group of donors supporting DeSantis, the New  York Post reported.

As of the end of June, Federal Election Commission records indicate that they group held just shy of $97 million in reserves.
