Trump Declines Proposed Final Debate Against Harris

 October 10, 2024

Former President Donald Trump announced his decision not to engage in another televised debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, despite the efforts of CNN and Fox News to schedule additional encounters.

Trump's decision to forego an additional on-stage clash was made as voting in some states has already gotten underway, as the Washington Examiner reports.

On Wednesday, just before an event in Reading, Pennsylvania, Trump revealed his refusal to participate through a post on Truth Social.

He expressed that the proposed timing was inappropriate, given that ballots in some jurisdictions had already been cast. Trump said his decision was further influenced by Harris’s recent comments indicating her alignment with President Biden's policies.

Trump Responds

In his social media post, Trump declared, "IT IS VERY LATE IN THE PROCESS, VOTING HAS ALREADY BEGUN – THERE WILL BE NO REMATCH!" emphasizing his belief that the time for direct confrontation had passed. He also added, "BESIDES, KAMALA STATED CLEARLY, YESTERDAY, THAT SHE WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT THAN JOE BIDEN, SO THERE IS NOTHING TO DEBATE."

Meanwhile, CNN set a deadline for a final response for its proposed debate on October 23 in Atlanta, asking both political camps to decide by noon Thursday. Despite Trump's rejection, Harris agreed to participate in CNN's event, further indicating her willingness to engage in political discourse with the former president.

CNN and Fox News Seek Debate Opportunities

Fox News, for its part, proposed another debate, suggesting potential dates of either Oct. 24 or 27 in Pennsylvania. The moderators named for this event were Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, and the intention was for them to host a 90-minute session.

Fox News Media's Jay Wallace and Jessica Loker described the event as a platform for making final arguments, emphasizing the importance of allowing the candidates space to articulate their closing messages to the electorate.

Harris accepted CNN’s offer, indicating her readiness to continue engaging with Trump on a public platform. However, Trump's steadfast refusal to debate further illustrated his strategy of focusing on past achievements rather than seeking new confrontations.

Previous Debates and Trump's Justifications

Trump and Harris most recently shared a stage at an ABC News-hosted debate in Philadelphia. Additionally, Trump participated in an earlier debate with President Joe Biden on June 27 in Atlanta. Referencing these experiences, Trump insisted he had emerged victorious and saw no need for another encounter.

In his words, Trump asserted, "I WON THE LAST TWO DEBATES, ONE WITH CROOKED JOE, THE OTHER WITH LYIN’ KAMALA. I ACCEPTED THE FOX-NEWS INVITATION TO DEBATE KAMALA ON SEPTEMBER 4TH, BUT SHE TURNED IT DOWN." This statement highlighted not only his confidence in his previous performances but also his frustration with the outcomes.

With Trump's dismissal of new debate opportunities, the vice president planned to proceed with engaging the public and solidifying her positions. For now, the anticipation of any rematch between the two remains unfulfilled.

The ongoing dynamic between these high-profile political figures continues to capture public interest, with Trump's move intensifying scrutiny of his campaign strategies.

While Harris's team appears willing to engage voters through the on-air debate format, Trump's approach centers on his perceived successes in prior encounters.

The push for debates from major networks underscores the traditional role of such events in American political campaigns. Despite these offers, the absence of Trump onstage introduces new dynamics in preparing for the upcoming election date.

Conclusion: Summary of Events and Implications

In summary, as the election approaches, former President Trump has refused debate offers from CNN and Fox News, emphasizing the fact that voting as already started and his belief that he has already notched past debate victories.

With Vice President Harris accepting televised debate invitations, networks continue to try and maintain opportunities for public discussion, even as new dynamics unfold with Trump's decision not to participate.

The intersection of campaign strategies and media platforms continues to shape the political landscape in this election cycle.
