Capitol Police Detain Congressional Staffer Found with Ammunition

 December 3, 2024

A staff member for Rep. Joe Morelle was arrested with ammunition in his bag during a routine security check.

The U.S. Capitol Police detained Michael Hopkins, an aide to Morelle, after discovering ammunition and magazines in his bag at the Cannon House Office Building, as Newsmax reports.

The incident occurred early Monday morning when Hopkins attempted to enter the Cannon House Office Building.

At approximately 8:45 a.m., during an X-ray screening, security personnel found four ammunition magazines and 11 rounds in his bag.

Hopkins, 38, is facing charges of unlawful possession of ammunition, including a high-capacity magazine. Following the discovery, Hopkins was taken into custody by the Capitol Police.

Investigation Triggered by Ammunition Discovery

Hopkins reportedly told the Capitol Police that he had forgotten the ammunition was in his bag. This statement was highlighted during his initial interaction with law enforcement.

"Hopkins told them he forgot that the ammunition was in his bag," stated a representative from the Capitol Police. This oversight has led to a significant security concern within the congressional community.

Morelle, whose office Hopkins serves, was promptly informed of the arrest. His office has begun an internal review to understand the full context of the situation.

Morelle’s Office Reacts to Staff Arrest

"This morning, our office was informed that a member of our staff was arrested by Capitol Police. We are currently gathering more information regarding the circumstances of the arrest," explained a spokesperson from Morelle’s office.

The statement continued, stressing cooperation with ongoing investigations: "Our office is fully committed to cooperating with the investigation."

"As Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, Congressman Morelle is devoted to ensuring a safe and secure workplace for all," the statement added.

Morelle, representing New York's 25th Congressional District, recently secured a fourth term. His district encompasses all of Monroe County and parts of northwestern Ontario County.

Security and Oversight at the Cannon Building

The arrest raises questions about the security measures at the Cannon House Office Building, one of the office buildings dedicated to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Morelle, as the Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, plays a significant role in the oversight of House operations, including security protocols.

The incident has prompted a review of security procedures at the Capitol to prevent similar breaches in the future.

Capitol Security and Legal Implications

Unlawful possession of ammunition, especially within such a secure environment as the Capitol, carries serious legal implications. The presence of a high-capacity magazine intensifies these concerns.

The legal process will consider the circumstances under which Hopkins carried the ammunition into a highly secure federal building. Details of the court proceedings are awaited as the investigation continues.

With Capitol security under scrutiny, this incident emphasizes the ongoing need for vigilance and strict adherence to security measures by all who enter these federal spaces.
