Chris Christie Claims No Fundamental Change in Trump After Assassination Attempt

 July 20, 2024

Amid heightened drama at the Republican National Convention, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's remarks about Donald Trump have sparked widespread discourse.

Christie, a failed presidential candidate, argued that a recent assassination attempt had not altered the fundamental characteristics or behavior of Trump, as the Washington Examiner reports.

The former governor, who expressed his views during a segment on ABC's The View, discussed the resilience of Trump's personality despite the life-threatening event he had just escaped. He observed Trump during a crucial speech at the Republican National Convention, notably soon after Trump had been targeted by an assassination attempt.

Trump remained unswayed in his core characteristics according to Christie. Despite the scripted attempt by his staff to reflect a somber tone suited to the gravity of recent events, Trump veered off-script. Christie noted that Trump ad-libbed a significant portion of his speech, reverting to his usual style of rhetoric.

Divergence Between Script and Impromptu Elements

In detailing the specific contents of the speech, Christie emphasized that the written speech by Trump’s staff almost rose to the occasion.

However, Trump himself appeared dissatisfied with the content, which prompted his extemporaneous additions. Christie disclosed that Trump disliked the first 15 minutes of his remarks, an aspect where he felt his true beliefs did not align with what he was compelled to say.

This duality in Trump’s presentation, between scripted caution and instinctual rhetoric, was a focal point of Christie’s critique. He argued that such moments reveal the unchanged nature of the former president, even after facing personal danger.

Furthermore, Christie slammed the media for their portrayal of Trump during the convention. He suggested that the media had been misled by the campaign's portrayal of Trump, indicating a significant disconnect between Trump’s public image and his personal convictions.

Christie Critiques Media Portrayal

The portrayal of Trump in the media was particularly irksome to Christie. He likened the network correspondents to being under the influence, so drastic was their misreading of Trump’s altered demeanor.

“It was like watching the media coverage the first three nights. I wonder if every network correspondent had taken drugs,” Christie remarked, expressing his disbelief at the narrative being sold to the public.

Christie’s harsh critique extended to the overall media response to Trump at the convention, where he felt reporters were all too ready to accept a softened image of Trump that was at odds with his ad-libbed assertions.

“So, I think, quite frankly, the media this week completely failed the American people. They bought hook, line, and sinker all of the garbage that the Trump campaign was leaking out to them,” Christie articulated, highlighting a deep swath of manipulation he perceived in the coverage.

Evaluating the Unchanging Persona of Trump

At the heart of Christie’s argument was the belief that fundamental traits, especially at an advanced age, are highly resistant to change. “He’s 78 years old, and at that age, it is, at least in my human experience, infrequent to find a 78-year-old who changes the core of who they are,” Christie explained.

This perspective aligns with Christie’s continued emphasis on Trump’s consistent return to familiar rhetorical strategies, even in the face of scripted speeches aimed at portraying a transformed figure.

"When he opens his mouth, that's when the acting becomes more difficult," he noted, pointing out the challenges Trump faces in maintaining a crafted public persona.

Reflections on Political Performance and Perceived Reality

Christie’s dissection of the events at the Republican National Convention provides a complex picture of political performance versus perceived political reality. While his staff prepared a nearly perfect script, Trump’s deviations painted a different picture, reflective of his unaltered persona, the former governor asserted.

The interplay between what is scripted and what is genuinely believed by Trump seems to be an ongoing struggle, according to Christine, something that manifests most evidently in his public speeches.

This disparity, Christie claims, serves as a critical lens through which the public and media might better understand the political and personal reality of figures like Trump.
