Obama jumps to Ilhan Omar’s defense after HSI raid in immigration fraud probe
Former President Barack Obama defended Rep. Ilhan Omar after federal agents raided her D.C. home in an immigration fraud probe, framing the case as political targeting by the Trump administration.
Homeland Security Investigations agents hit the Minnesota Democrat’s Washington, D.C., residence in a Monday raid tied to a criminal fraud investigation into her immigration paperwork. Agents seized her cellphone and confiscated personal records as the Justice Department issued subpoenas to her relatives.
Breitbart News reported that Obama answered on X by casting the probe as selective punishment for her criticism of President Donald Trump, not a straight-line look at decades-old citizenship records.
Obama’s post treated the raid as proof that “the full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president.” That is the former president’s claim. The agents’ stated lane, as described in the coverage, is immigration fraud and the paperwork that made Omar a citizen.
Phone seizure and family texts drove the warrant
Fox News Digital first flagged that federal authorities seized Omar’s cellphone during the Monday search of her D.C. home. The seizure sat inside a broader criminal fraud investigation into her immigration file.
Earlier this year, investigators also took the phone of Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor. Three sources familiar with the matter told the New York Times that family text messages on that phone prompted the search warrant and the later raid on Omar’s residence, the same sequence federal agents have pressed in related Omar case coverage.
No charging document, case number, or public inventory of the seized materials appears in the available reporting. What is clear is the mechanism: HSI executed a warrant, took devices and records, and DOJ reached relatives with subpoenas.
Omar, a Somalia-born lawmaker representing Minnesota, immigrated to the United States in 1995 and became a naturalized citizen in 2000. Those years are the fixed points. The live dispute is what age she was when her father naturalized and whether the path she took was lawful.
Obama’s citizenship math and the age question
Obama offered his own timeline. He said Omar came to the United States “with her father when she was 12 years old,” and that “five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen.”
"If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically."
That is Obama’s account of how derivative citizenship worked in her case. He then described the administration’s theory as “unsubstantiated”, the idea that she was actually 18 when her father naturalized and therefore never became a citizen the automatic way.
He went further. Obama said the administration is “actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar” and that agents are hunting a “nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago.” He listed other figures he says the Justice Department has pursued under Trump, from New York’s attorney general to a former FBI director to Federal Reserve officials. Those comparisons are his political argument, not findings in the Omar warrant file.
He also sketched her résumé, college graduate, community organizer, and, in his words, “the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S.” Biography does not close a fraud file. Paperwork does.
Political shield versus a paperwork case
Obama’s core line was institutional:
"It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs."
He said that is “exactly” what the Trump administration is doing to Omar. The conservative reading of the same facts is simpler. A sitting member of Congress is not above an immigration-fraud inquiry. A warrant based on family texts, a phone seizure, and relative subpoenas is ordinary investigative work when citizenship status is in doubt, the kind of scrutiny Homeland Security home searches have already put on the Omar household.
Omar has not released a public quote in this package answering the age-at-naturalization question. DHS and DOJ have not, in the cited reporting, issued a detailed public statement walking through probable cause. The gap leaves two stories running side by side: Obama’s claim of a political hit, and the agents’ reported focus on whether 1990s immigration records were accurate.
The former president framed the raid as persecution of a critic. Voters who want secure borders and honest naturalization files hear something else, a demand that a powerful Democrat get the same document check anyone else would face.
Old records, new pressure
Obama told followers to “think about that” after describing the raid, the confiscated records, and the seized phone. The pressure is real. Devices are gone. Relatives are under subpoena. The citizenship clock runs back to 1995 and 2000.
What remains unproven in public is the final legal conclusion, whether Omar’s age and filing path hold up, or whether investigators have evidence of fraud. Until charging papers or a formal clearance appear, the case sits on seizures and a contested biography, not a verdict.
That has not stopped the political class from choosing sides. Obama’s intervention fits a familiar pattern of high-profile cover for progressive allies under scrutiny, much as other recent turns involving the former president have shown him working the phones and the narrative when Democratic fortunes are at stake, including private outreach after sharp Biden-era criticism.
Institutional questions around Obama’s own post-presidency brand keep surfacing in other lanes, from six-figure Obama Foundation payrolls to contractor fights tied to his presidential center. None of that decides Omar’s immigration file. It does show how quickly the former president still steps into Democratic defense mode when federal heat arrives.
For now the facts on the table are narrow and hard. HSI raided a congresswoman’s D.C. home. Her phone and records left with the agents. Family texts on a sister’s earlier-seized phone reportedly opened the door. Obama answered with a democracy lecture and a deportation warning. The investigators answered with a warrant.
Citizenship is not a vibe and not a talking point. It is a paper trail. If Omar’s trail is clean, the probe will show it. If it is not, no X post from a former president rewrites the file.
